Hey everyone! Since our local paper and it's so called "reporters" and our local radio stations and their silly broadcasters don't cover the news, I guess I will give it a try. Our Robotics Team went to Knoxville, TN last weekend for competition. THEY WON and now they get to go to the World Finals in St. Louis in April. These kids are so intelligent and hard working....they deserve some recognition....more so then the silly ball teams. No one funds their activities, even though the cheerleaders and their silly crap gets funded and reported on as well. Anyway, CONGRATULATIONS ROBOTICS TEAM AND A JOB WELL DONE! I hope you all do great at the WORLD Finals, even though I'm sure school won't be dismissed for Academic reasons, maybe some will be there to support you all anyways. I know I will be! Hello people! There is more to life then balls and short skirts.

Don't throw stones at the student-athletes in our community just because academics do not get the same coverage in the media. Coverage at any level, whether it's local, national or international, is determined by the interest of the reader/viewer/listener. Do they televise the UK debate team? Of course not. Perhaps if you'd make a friendly call to the local newspaper or radio station and let them know about this maybe they would do a story. My guess is they don't know about it because no one cares!

You know, you can recognize the accomplishments of the Robotics Team without ridiculing those who play sports or are involved in other activities. It shouldn't be an either/or situation. We should wish all of these kids great success in life.

I am happy to see someone giving these kids credit for such a grand accomplishment. I look forward to reading about the outcome at the World Finals in St. Louis! Way to go kids!

I can understand the original posters dismay. Sports dominates the student news around here. Perhaps a letter to the editor of our local paper isn't such a bad idea after all... I didn't even know there was a robotics team. Bet they don't either!

So let's try to just focus on the subject that was intended, which is the robotics team and their win. I understand why the comment was worded as it was. We all see the biased reporting and it seems that if it's not sports related, it goes unnoticed. Not to take away from any particular team sport, but it would be nice to see accomplishments such as this mentioned in the local papers on a regular basis too.

I agree, "Tough Love".....problem is, there is ALWAYS 6 pages of sports and maybe one little column of Academics....so you need to preach that to the folks reporting....not me.

It doesn't matter how many pages the paper devotes to sports or to any topic for that matter. The point is that trying to elevate one school group at the expense of another is wrong. And just think of the message you are sending to the kids. Isn't there enough jealousy and bullying in the schools already? Instead of making fun of the jocks and cheerleaders, why don't you contact the paper and tell them about the Robotics team. I suspect they would be thrilled to do a piece on this fine group of young people. The CJ gives quite a bit of press to the Raptor Club -- another non-sports related group -- and I bet they would be more than happy to applaud the achievements of the Robotics Club as well.

Hello? I'm NOT the one that "elevates" one school group over another....it's the local radio and newspaper. Are just stupid or what? Did you even read my post? I didn't make fun of jocks either...I simply pointed out that Academics gets 0 recognition while sports gets ALL kinds of recognition. I wasn't bullying anyone but the fools that run our paper and radio stations. How do you think kids read the paper everyday and see article after article about the exact same groups accomplishment, but they never get recognized? Maybe insignificant, unimportant, left out? Hmmmm.....food for thought?

So they ran a story but they're still a rag? Guess they just can't please you, huh?

Well, "wondering", ONE story out of possible hundreds that never have been reported, doesn't really qualify it as a legit newspaper. I'm happy Robotics finally got a nod, but the CJ is still a rag.:)

I have to agree. ONE story is a start, and perhaps is a precursor to good reporting on the horizon for ALL of our students... Maybe it's also suggesting that we could start getting a better variety of stories in print.

I think perhaps if they could hire a reporter who isn't a total "sports" enthusiast, the more academically inclined student body could start to get the recognition that they also deserve for accomplishments like this.

I'm now sorry I suggested that the original poster start a thread to congratulate these student of the robotics club. She was nothing short of hammered for her comment. There was no reason to shred her to pieces like some of you have.

"Say", I'm sure you realize that sadly, this is what Topix is best known for. People don't have to agree with everything that's placed on here, but in the same token they don't have to be so ill tempered in their responses....

Had "Say" simply congratulated the Robotics team without ridiculing the children who do sports and cheerleading things it would have been fine. However, she started this thread with a hurtful post #1 by saying:

"These kids are so intelligent and hard working....they deserve some recognition....more so then the silly ball teams. No one funds their activities, even though the cheerleaders and their silly crap gets funded and reported on as well. "

I'll never understand why folks in this town can't give someone a compliment without putting down another person or group in the process. Id doesn't have to be an either or proposition. No wonder bullying is on the increase in our school -- these kids learn it from people like "Say."

Great article in Sunday's paper, regarding the Robotics team! Way to go Robotics! Thanks, again Nope for getting my point.....I don't mind the comments from the ones that didn't get it...I'm always up for a heated debate and folks trying to turn the conversation away from the subject at hand just confirms my view as far as I'm concerned.:) Have a great day all.
