I recently filed for unemployment and was able to "claim" my benefits on Monday. How long does it usually take for a person to receive their check in the mail?
Also, before anyone else makes a snide remark, I have been searching obsessively for a job. I was actually turned down for 2 of them recently, because I was "over qualified". I am a college graduate and have worked consistently since graduating high school 15 years ago. I am the result of a company downsizing. I don't enjoy receiving unemployment, but it is something I have to do in order to survive. I still have student loans I am repaying and a mortgage. We don't qualify for any other assistance such as food stamps or medical care, my husband has a decent paying job, but it simply isn't enough to support our family.
I have placed my resume in so many places and searched the classifieds and internet job banks, the job market here is scant. If it were feasible, I would pack up and move to an area that has a better job market, which I may end up having to do anyhow.
So for those who are saying nasty things, just remember that it could happen to you or a loved one as well. We are in a time where "job security" seems to be a thing of the past.

I have recently lost my job and signed up for unemployment. I had to wait a month to request a check, received a letter stating the amount I would be able to draw and went online to request my check. However, I am still waiting for the first check. When I called the automated line, it says I have been given credit for the two weeks however no check has been issued. Does anyone know anything about this and why credit was given but no check issued? I have tried calling the local office but there is no answer. I would just like to know if anyone else has run into this situation. Thanks for any help.

as anyone with any mind at all would know to draw unemployment a person has to do weekly job searches.
so do you apply for jobs that are overqualified for you so that you can continue getting unemployment? That's how ppl can continue their relaxed remote control lifestyle...:)

Call the local unemployment office again on Monday. They were closed Thursday and Friday. They are really nice and they can tell you if your check was mailed out and when.

You are a dried up geezer. You wouldn't know about people who work and are in need of the unemployment to keep going in between jobs. I would hate to be you. Some people do actually work for a living but I guess you don't have those in your circle of friends.

Republicans that hace come into office are trying to put a freeze on unemployment extensions as of now. So they may very well end the extensions.

if you are getting vacation or any other pay from workplace, then they give you credit and you will get back paid for the weeks you are given credit for.

I see no reason your unemployment checks should stop until you have to go apply for the extra extension which the republicans are trying to fight against tooth and nail. Even if this is approved it will take quiet a while to go through all the senate and the house again before it ever gets back to working order again. They may even put a freeze on our income tax returns according to what I heard on the news, they are many other things they intend to put a freeze on, but these are the ones that really caught my attention. Actually, they want to completely do away with the unemployment extension, I got this in writing when I wrote our Senator Mitch McConnell. His party felt that it was contributing to the federal deficit. His words, not mine.

I don't know but on a 2 week off I think he was elgible to get it. On a 1 week shutdown you are not elgible the way I understand it. Mine got messed up like that once and it was a month and several trips up there to straighten it out but I finally got all the backpay. He will have to go back in.

Can you get unemployment while going to college, even if you aren't actively seeking work? I know someone who claims he can do this for up to 2 years while getting a degree but it doesn't make sense to me.

You can get UI while attending college if you are part of the TRA program which was established for people who have lost their jobs due to companies going overseas because of NAFTA or things like that. Other than that you have to be actively looking for work and able and available. If you are sick, you aren't eligible because you are not able. If you are going to school full time and not looking for work you are not eligible because you are not available for work. In order to get paid while going to school you have to apply and be accepted into an approved training program. Hope this helps, used to work at UI.

According to Bloomberg Reports there are over 3 million unfilled jobs in this country simply because prospective employees lack the right skills. Quit trying to figure out how to scam the system and get out there, get the training needed and get a decent job. That said, chances are you'll never find the good the good jobs in this area. FIgure out where they are and move there. If you really want to be successful, you won't do it in this area. If you want to spend your life on the dole -- you're definitely in the right place.

I agree with that, I kept telling him there would be a catch. He was fired from his job for calling in too much. Personally, I don't think he should receive any unemployment because he wasn't performing well in the workplace and deserved to be fired but he managed to get it. Now he claims he is going to attend college this fall and receive unemployment while doing so for 2 years. And the degree he is seeking is not related to the job he was working at either. Seems totally unfair to me. I work full time and attend college full time as well. I also have a child. My friend doesn't have any kids. No reason he can't work and go to college at the same time too.
