Somerset needs to get the older people out of the offices and get younger people in there to bring Somerset back up to the 20th Century, Down town has went to H...! Growing up in Somerset the the bomb on Saturdays when everyone went to town to bull sh.. Thats when the Virginia was open and Druthers was there. But Somerset is wanting to stay old and not face that times have changed and so does the town.
I remember when the Dairy Queen was behind the Court House anlong with the Grocery Store on the Corner by the Court House and across from the Library.Thats when a quarter went along way for the kids.

The produce house was diagonally across W. Mt. Vernon at S. Vine -- The 1st skating rink I remember was on Market St.( F & F drive Thru property ) then it went to the bldg .( now gone ) in front of the Beecher House ( Hotel )--Skate city ?? was on hwy . 27 at Midway center - then to spot at N. E. corner behind Som. Mall-

The Western Auto store was on E. Mt . Vernon - one door east of the Va. Cenema - owned by Mr. Carter Ross - Pierces Mkt . was on the west side of the Va. Cenema - E. Mt. Vernon St.

I hate to see it as well, it's ironic that we have a sign in front of the library, on the lamp post that reads, "Welcome to Historic downtown Somerset." and yet the Historic part is being destroyed.
We are getting a new chapter in the book of our town's History, and that is the New Judicial Center. It will bring jobs as it is being built. After all someone has to build it.

I totally agree that the Judicial Center will be a step toward the future , but , I can still remember 99% of the old business's from the mid '50's 'til today - Wilsons Shoe store & repair ( basement - Masonic Bldg )- Lay - Simpson Furniture ?-Just off the square on S. Main -( not the e. mt . Vernon store ) The LeGrande Bus Garage - Norman Parkers Sunoco - Uptown Standard / Shell - A&P store - Carl's Gulf -etc..

I remember going to Red's Drive Inn ( a barber shop now) next to the old Greyhound Bus Depot when I was young, they had these curly french fries that were delicious.

Yes , he did - Back in the 50's -I used to ride with him when I was 4 yrs. old - They had a stop in front of Goldenbergs and one in front of the western auto next to the Va. cenema - When Garner Rash started his bus route , he stopped by the 1st Methodist Church -

Do you all remember when the fountain area had trees all the way around it? This was way before they installed the clock by the bank. Remember when the bank had the huges weight scale just below the steps?. Or when the Coffee shop and the eye Dr's use to be on the corner across from Western auto?

From day 1 , the fountain square had a grey concrete , pebble grain surface wall around it - in the early 60's , my uncle , George Raymond Abbott , laid the brick finish on the walls - the light house was still there and working - Last time I saw the light house , it was in a yard on Slate Branch Rd.- Log cabin - in front of the golf course -
