Today’s CJ has a complete list of the 60 community leaders who are behind this move, but their online site doesn’t yet provide that information. That said it, looks like this initiative already has relatively broad support. This is a very interesting article and look forward to the results of the study.

The citizens of somerset has some of the lowest taxes and utilities in the state right now if there is a merge with the county they will double or triple . The city has their own water, sewer and natural gas why would they want to join with the county.

Chris Girdler has endorsed it so that means Hal's on board too. It's a done deal.

Ain't gonna happen. Somerset brings millions of dollars in hard assets to the to,e and what does the county bring? Nothing but a beggar's need.

Read the article again. It's about being able to increase our bonding level so we can grow as a community, which in simple terms translates into more and better jobs. Other than that very little changes.

From the article: "Under state law, a unified government would not affect school districts, existing taxing districts in the county, or local option areas. It would not alter boundaries of precincts and legislative districts. Unified government, if approved by voters, would vacate current political positions and establish a new governing structure."

Perhaps this time we might have the good sense to elect some genuine leaders who are interested in the welfare of the county instead of a bunch of good old boys who only want to stuff their pockets.

This is another consolidation of power idea marketed to people in a way that seems reasonable.

Let's here the whole deal, but keep in mind it is being pitched to you by people who want more control.

If you don't like good old boy politics, as they say, then don't allow the control to move into fewer hands.

These so called business leaders want fewer people in control, that is what they want. How stupid can they be to ask the same folks for the money to research this, and its these people they are asking for money from that will be replaced. Smart huh? When they say better for the community, they mean better for themselves. I agree lots of politicians in this town need replaced. Starting with Eddie Girdler, Barty Bullock, most all the council and everyone of the magistrates. Also Flynn, Todd, Wood, Hatfield, Harris, Troxtle all need replaced. Also dept heads at the city, lots of people are benefiting from our tax dollars right now and they need out.

If I ran as PVA my platform would be to lower property tax.

If I ran as magistrate my platform would be to cut magistrate salaries.

But, people in this county would rather vote for someone that does them some paultry favor or someone they "know" rather than someone that hates government waste, abuse and nepotism.

I understand your position and understand your concern. However, looking at the steering committee for this effort, the 60 members represent all sectors of the community -- banking, education, business, churches, agriculture, law enforcement, medicine, real estate, construction, investing and accounting, business development, just to name a few and I see nothing nefarious lurking in the bushes. I view this as an opportunity to reset our local government and to remove a lot of the redundancy and pork. Not only would this change how our local government works, but it would also be a chance to rethink salaries and benefit packages our representatives receive. Hopefully they will be more modest and in line with today's fiscal realities of smaller and more efficient government. One of the things I like best is that we decide only AFTER the a finished plan is put on the table for all voters to review. It's rare when we have an opportunity to start clean -- keeping the parts of government that work and discarding those that don't. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.

Keep in mind that in small town like Somerset you can be a complete idiot and be considered a community leader.

You only need to look at the leader (spokesman) to see who is in it for their selves . I am not saying all of these people are out to get something, but most of them want the influence and you can't argue with me on that in any way. They will have to fund it by themselves, i do not believe council or magistrates will vote to give them money for this.

Looks like Barty recognizes the potential benefits of a unified government and is in favor of the study.

Mayor of Burnside also said in today's paper that it's worth considering.

Barty is easily manipulated , cause he has no clue what he is doing anyway, little girl probably likes the idea and that is why he likes it.

This would be good for a county that is broke but not for a city that is doing well or its citizens the bad part is the fiscal court picks half of the new government and they are the ones that got the county in this mess. The city should not give money to the county to do their own survey, if anything the city do a survey to see any advantage for the city taxpayers.

Guss i am being mean cause i said Barty has no clue in what he is doing, if it makes you folks feel better in anyway, i have told him this to his face. I do think he is a good man but he is no leader by a long shot. He lets Eddie Girdler and now Chris Girdler dictate what he does, instead of him being the one that decides. But he can sing, so lets vote him to lead our county and hire kin of magistrates that were elected. I wonder how his magistrates feel about him willing to put their jobs on the line ? Guess he doesn't think they do a very good job, i agree. But handing over millions of dollars on the backs of taxpayers in the city of Somerset have put in the pot over the years , is not right. The solution is vote new people in and take it out of the ole boy system.

Just wait till planning and zoning comes to the county...WOW! Farmers will really go for this one, where a select group of three-piece suits tell the farm owner what he/she an do with their land. Don't even think about building codes, business licenses, etc In the county.
