No it does not involve the mafia. The book is about a famous murder that happened in Whitesburg, KY that involved the attempted murder of a doctor and the murder of his daughter. During the crime over a million dollars in cash was stolen from the home.

The book recounts the crimes and the trials of the killers, and also delves into the role that Lester Burns played. Burns was at the pinnacle of his profession at that time and was arguably the best criminal attorney in the state, he was certainly the most flamboyant. By taking the case and receiving stolen money as part of his retainer fee Burns incriminated himself which led to his eventual dismissal from the Kentucky Bar and serving time in prison.

As for Lester Burns these days I am not sure of his whereabouts, however I do know for a fact that within the past year or so he has re-applied to be reinstated to the Bar. I would imagine for symbollic reasons only.

also the book incriminates curt davis, who escaped prosecution with a huge amount of money??!! and sent another local attorney to prison. It all started when two local boys, who had been busted in Florida, and were in jail there, overheard a con discuss a Dr. in Neon -Fleming Kentucky who was rumored to have a million dollars stuffed in a trunk on his back porch, and when thay were sprung, b-lined it straight to the dear country doctors house. Lots of locals were indirectly involved in this crime too. The book names names and is very well written. Will scare the sh#t out of you!

In my opinion, Mr Burns is a classic psychopath and should be avoided by all. Reportedly, he took great pleasure in autographing the book, in spite of the fact, it was not in any way favorable toward him. This type of personality is incapable of human emotion--no fear, no humiliation, no shame, no remorse...a soul without footprints. I had the displeasure of knowing this person. JMHO

Burns knew where his "fee" came from. Now one must prove that their attorney's fee comes from clean money. FYI some of the money was so old from the trunk, it was moldy/crumbly Confederate notes the good doctor squirreled away. He was a fine man. Doctored folks who were poor, and had no money. So sad. And his daughter had come home from UK to spend the weekend with him because the doctors wife had died a short time before and she knew he needed her support. Talk about a cruel twist of fate.

The money was not Confederate - It may have been old and moldy - It's common knowledge that Lester , Dale Mitchell , Cletis Maricle and maybe more were hired to represent Bartley , Hodges and friend - Sheriff ( at the time ) John Adams and Frank Cassada provided security at the farm while the money was actually being LAUNDERED - I worked for Lester for a short while , and let me tell you , it was interesting - Nuf Sed - He is not hard to contact or talk to - A brilliant mind wasted -

What ever happened to John Adams? Was he allowed to remain sherriff after that? I don't remember, I was a young child when Adams was sherriff, and was always curious as to how he kept out of prosecution?

Dr. Roscoe Acker and his daughter Tammy were attacked in Fleming-Neon, they killed an elderly couple in Gray Hawk during their crime spree as well.....Lester used to have a farm out towards the end of Slate Branch where one of those new developments is now, the one KIA9 refers to. And last I heard was living just past Stigall Lane on the left out Slate Branch.
