Dunkin Donuts came. That's prove enough that Somerset is changing. Been to several Kohls stores that weren't off interstate highways.
I'm not sure I even get the attraction. The Kohl's I've been to didn't seem much different than Belks. Am I missing something?

From a purely selfish standpoint I'd like to see a Bestbuy in Somerset but, in reality BB will probably be closing store rather than opening any new ones.
HH Gregg would be a great alternative. But, I doubt the demographics are right for a store in Somerset.
Fun to dream though!

The real problem at least from where I sit is the mentality. We can't have nice things because we don't have nice people. I am sorry but small mindedness rules the day in a place like Somerset(with the good ol' boy system to boot). To follow up on what Same Old Story said...The other issue is serious lack of education and a horrible sense of entitlement. You are not entitled to a good paying job unless you have the education for one. If you don't have the education for one nor the drive to get the education then what you can get is a job at McDonalds or other food service places.
I like to add to that if I could, since moving to this area I have a also noticed that a lot of the workers (I've dealt with), take no pride in their work...do the job right, and to the best of their ability. Mostly what I run into is workers who are there to put their time in, and collect a check no matter how they do it. For instance I've had mechanical work done on my vehicle twice, seems alot of people here think they are mechanics, but both times I had this work done, the work was botched, and once my vehicle was even damaged by the mechanic! If I could find an ASE certified mechanic, with the "tools" he needs, THAT is where I'd take my vehicle! I saw a "so-called" mechanic at one of the places I went, pounding on an alternator with a hammer! Sorry, there's no place to use a hammer on an alternator.
Even most of the service employee's I run into, act like I owe them a living, go into restaurants, the workers have scowls on their faces like they're ready to fight if you say one word. I people don't go back to places like that, and is most likely why you lose your job. No customers, they don't need you.
I was always taught growing up to do my work right, the way it's supposed to be done, and even go the extra mile,....because that job has your signature on it, and people remember who did it, especially if it's done the right way! They'll also remember who did the job if it's not done right,....and they'll not be back again. Take pride in your work, no matter how menial you think it is.......

Do you actually believe that if a McDonald's employees' salary was doubled, they would do anything different? Their attendance may be better but that's probably all that would change.

Servers at nice sit-down restaurants that serve alcohol often make more than minimum wage, sometimes far more.

Mentality, mentality, mentality. I have never seen a place with a more anti-business mentality than Somerset.
How many times I've heard people say how much they HATE buckeyes.
So what, smile and take their money. Even better smile big and take lots of their money.
If all you can do is stick your chin out and say F U, then stop complaining about Somerset not getting any better.
We need to build up our tourist industry and then we can benefit from the good restaurants and jobs it creates.
I talked to a guy that I know in Ohio and he asked me WTF was wrong with people down here. I didn't say much but it reminded me of how Somerset folks always talk down to tourists.
Sure they may be a-holes, again, take their money smile and send them home broke. We win.
Nobody goes on vacation to a place where the locals treat them like sh!t.

I agree with this, hell I married a buckeye. However, that said, I can see where the mentality comes from. They come off as holier than thou, kinda rude, and downright hateful sometimes.

For example, I witnessed an Ohio native at that BP across from JR Jackson's lot clean out McDonald's bags from his van......ON THE GROUND....three feet away from a garbage can. You better believe he got an ear full, and rightfully so.

I used to attend races all over the south. I've met New Yorkers, folks from Jersey, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts,,you name it. You care to wager where the only rude, arrogant loud mouths came from? You guessed it. Ohio. The inbred jokes get old, that's when I tell them that a buckeye is just a useless nut you stick between the cheeks of your butt to keep the sweat off the jewels ....or the only good things to ever come out of Ohio is Johnny Paycheck and I-75.

I know we need their money, but when most of the folks in surrounding states have a problem with them as well, maybe it's time they look in the mirror some too. It ain't just Somerset that has this attitude, ask a Michigan native sometime, I've known several of them. One would even go way out of his way to go up I-69 through Ft. Wayne to get home to avoid Ohio. My inlaws are pretty nice folks, but one of the extended family members about got his nose plastered across his face for his smart mouth.

Mandated pay by the restaurant, sure. I meant with tips. Sure, it's possible to get screwed over when working for tips, but everyone I know who works as a server has tales of $100 nights and they're not that uncommon.

You've got a lot of gall talking about throwing trash on the ground, I see trash thrown on the sides of roads everywhere around somerset, hell I've seen a bunch of workers clean up all the trash along Old 90 Loop 2 one day, and 2 days later it was "trashed" full again! Yep, and "plastering noses" or shooting people is the mentality in somerset,'bout all you people know how to do is fight. If the Ohio Navy had any smarts they'd all stay over Jamestown way,.......just remember Cumberland isn't the only Lake in the world....

I don't throw trash anywhere but where it should be, and if I see a local doing it, I'll call them out too. Old 90 Loop, and down on 790 is the worst area to be sure.

As for the plastering of the nose, that guy had it coming. How would you like it if I questioned your ancestory without even knowing you? As I said, I married a girl from Ohio, and her family is good people, of course you missed that part I guess. I have family who moved there for factory work. I even said maybe some folks need to look in the mirror sometimes, locals included. However, you took offense, guilty conscience perhaps?
