Another entitlement for those who want all the free crap. Granted if someone really, really, needed one like our elderly, who can't afford a phone, that's okay. We pay added on charges from our phones(land lines), don't know if cell phones have these charges, I pay as I go.

Assurance Wireless is part of the federal LifeLine program which began in the mid-1980s during the Reagan administration. Itís original goal was to provide phone land line service to low income individuals. It later morphed into a program to bring the digital/computer age to low income families during the Bush administration. Today, instead of providing the traditional land line service, Assurance Wireless offers assistance with cell phone purchases and subsequent monthly bills. From what I have read, benefits vary from state to state. Since KY has one of the most comprehensive welfare programs in the nation -- we receive more money from the federal government to help support our welfare population than most states -- it is possible that the Lifeline benefits here are more extensive than in many other states.

According to EHow: Lifeline customers save up to $10 per month on phone service, depending on the state in which they reside, according to the Federal Communications Communication. A 50 percent discount, up to $30, is also available to help with setup and installation fees, as of 2010.

The link for the federal Lifeline program is provided below and explains who is eligible for this program.

Budget Mobile has this service and its free. If you qualify, you get the phone free of charge and you get 250 free minutes a month. Their number is 1-888-777-4007. You must get some form of Government assistance to qualify.

I totally agree with you. There are so many people getting welfare that shouldn't be. They need to get off their lazy asses and get a job. A lot of people lie to get it and some get it then work somewhere and get paid cash. I know some one who does this and they are making twice what I make at my LEGAL job. The country is in bad shape. and keeps getting worse. These people have no morals just out to get what they can..........

Yes I also agree what do they offer for FREE to the working people?(NOTHING)I say if you want to own a Cell Phone pay the bill like I have to!Or you could get a job! Just like the (LADY) that passed away in her (CLOSET), I really am saddened by this and it breaks my heart for her to have suffered like she did if only she had a CELL PHONE ON her in her pocket or something God Rest her Soul! But back to the Free stuff our Govt. is handing out to much for the nonworking!

Its great but not enough minutes!
Hey is there any service provided for free hot tub, my man he gets cramps from sitting and needs this for our home, heck I might just use it myself I know sex is good in the tub cause thats what I get in when we go to the garden in lexington!
BY the way,for those who complain about free stuff for the poor! You just try to raise 5 kids on min. wage. If it was not for the free health insurance, food, rent and heat we would not have nice things such as Apple lap tops, a bass boat and 4 wheelers.(AND) I might even have to drop out of college!

I agree with most of the posters that perhaps this is not the best use of our tax dollars. In fact, gIven the scope of this project I assumed it was another Democratic Party give away program. However, it was started under Reagan, amplified under Bush 43 and supported by Hal for many years. Color me confused!

I have read some talk of this but I really thought there was no truth to it. I think the elderly and disabled, and very poor need it. But that's where you draw the line.

According to federal guidelines your income must be 135% below the poverty line OR participate in Medicaid, Food Stamps, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance (Section 8), Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), or the National School Lunch Program. In order to meed the monitory cap (135% below the poverty line) a family of 4 cannot earn above $31,118; a singleton not more than $15,080. I have no clue as to how many people in an area like this would qualify for the program.

I heard someone talking about their government supplied phones and thought it was some kind of joke. That is the reason I ask, they really didn't look like they would qualify for a government anything. I never knew this really existed but like every program it is a good thing for those that really need it. The government needs to crack down on welfare and better yet they need to crack down on middle and upper class welfare. All classes are taking advantage of the government.

The government is cracking down on individuals have filed and received more than one phone.

We work with disabled veterans, elderly, and other individuals to provide them with the service.

The company even offers discounted minutes for the phones. Annual re-certification is required to continue to qualify for the program.

Obama didn't start the Lifeline Program. It was started under President Ronald Reagan. Obama just included the cell phones.

Your phones will be turned off shortly, if you have more than one, as there are audits being performed now, and any person who has more than 1 at an address is subject to jailtime and fines.
