The issues in the county has much to do with the idea years ago when everyone was soooooooo excited that a NEW BUSINESS was coming in the area that would create jobs, many businesses were jumping on the idea of community growth, Real Estate and Builders were jumping on making a profit off the new business coming soon. Boy oh Boy was everyone taken for a thrill ride that pretty much set Somerset "back into the future".
Have you figure it out yet??

Look in the past 12 years, what actually has happened to those big Real Estate deals, how many bussinesses are now owned by those that you don't even know where they came from, or why they came to somerset, but yet fitting in real well among the folks that have lived in the area all their lives.
Have you figured it out yet??

In the last 12 years how has the area changed, the naighbors, the folks that just seem odd or something just don't look right in your naighborhoods? Has the crime rate lowered? Is the naighborhoods charming and inviting? How many homes are empty or now rented by what is there names?
Have you figured it out yet?

When there is deals made to bring in a Sophisticated, State of the Art Facility that brings in "thousands from around the world" to be entertained with the best technology, comforts and a place that is well suited for "the families" that can blend with the small communities around, with lakes, peace and quiet while also letting the "family tradition of values in a business", that locals would never consider to be in existance. The roadways are paved and upkeep is done for the travelers that can slip in and out without notice, yet are enjoying the perks as being labeled as the "tourist".
Have you figured it out yet?

Folks, when the deal was made for a Federal Prison System to locate in an area that was considered one of the poorest areas in the state and someone would benefit in the future, It was a benefit to bring in "thousands" to the area alright, but not in a good sense of productive to the community.
Research the facility and exactly the 95% housed, and then look around your area and question WHo are these people? Why did they come to the area? Where did they come from? When did they open that business, How was it funded for purchase or rental?

Folks, You are the product of which was the "best thing that could come to the area". The "Connections of the Business" in those that are the "Institution". The welcome wagon on the outside for those on the inside.
You are now the prisoner of the domain, for now the future will be that "Connection".

That's funny that you would say that. I have so many problems with people around here, but not the church folks. They come by and invite us every once in a while, but I'm never put off by them. We came back from vacation a couple of weeks ago and found an invitation to a church dinner in our mailbox. I'd say the real a-holes around here are the ones that seem to blame these small town church folks for all of the problems with this place. But as for the small country church people that we've met, some of the nicest people I've ever met, anywhere. It's the fatty tatty super bad, angry all the time hillbillies that I can't stand. Hick pride, sums them up.
I was talking about the business people.they try to use their church to make you think they are honest.Sorry about the mistake.

I usually don't post on here but, your comments are sadly mistaken. I have lived here all my life and it is great place to live and raise a family. I'm sorry you had trouble finding workers but not all of us are like that. My husband and I both work and are happy to do so. If Somerset is not for you then move to where you will be happy. I happen to love Somerset and all that it stands for. I try to be nice to people everyday. Maybe if you had a better attitude, the people wouldn't be rude to you. My pastor once told the church that if your not happy here then find somewhere that makes you happy. Life is to short to be unhappy. Take a good look at your self on the mirror and decide if its the city or yourself that you are not happy with. That's just my opinion, find a place that makes you happy.

well, after living here for several years I have just started to say something about this place. Time after time of my kids telling me how they hate living here and how people treat them and my wife saying the same. I deal with this everyday but I am a big boy and I do what I must do to take care of my family. My family and I are use to living in the south with a very different life style.I do know a person must live in a place for several year before making a judgement and I have. After living in different places for years I still have to say " Somerset Ky ia a very Bad place to Live"!

The best thing you could do for your family is to get out. I am being very serious of the situation. Look around at the people in the area, the mentality surrounding the area, the living condition around the area, the area is a non growth area and will remain that way in the future. It is overtaken by the Prison system outreach. Prisoners are let out daily, and they end up as the naighbor next door. Folks need to do a research on the trueths of the Federal Prisons and the after shock that relates to " time served" free to go. Where???

Then move to where you will be happy but don't bash our city and the good people. I rarely run into rude people. I don't know what area you are talking about or the people around you but if you are unhappy with Somerset move! It's that simple. No one is making you stay. I raised kids here and they loved it.

We must live in different cities, or at least different areas of the same city. Me and my family love it here. If its so bad...why do you stay. That just does not make sense to me? If my family and I was that miserable I would leave. Not hard to figure out! Go somewhere where you will be happy. Don't just sit and gripe. Move!

Let's look at this in another view.
This man is trying to make a living for his family, even though he is un happy with the area.
People on topix complain all the time about no jobs in Somerset, but will not move to where the jobs are.If you are in the desert you go to the water. This man is supporting his family at all cost.
Maybe the complainers could take a lesson from this man,if he is real.

I also hate living in Somerset. The residents are lazy like you say. The work ethic of most is horrible.
Yes you are tell the truth for sure. I know of a lot of families there that are all on welfare claiming to be disabled. Yes that is lazy the reason they are like that is because of the extra weight. My dad had the crippling r. arthritis and I seen him work when he could hardly get out of bed. These lazy men and women would never do that. Well they get it honest their parents are usually like that too.

The solution to the (your problem) is simple, if you dont like Somerset just leave. You can move anywhere you want to live, its a free country. Also to address the situation with unsatisfactory employees to hire for work, again you can relocate your business anywhere you choose. I don't think anyone will be overly concerned that you decided to move or if the business you are at closes out and relocates. It certainly isn't anything the people who live in Somerset can't get over. Just trying to give you a little friendly advice. After all life is to short to go through it being unhappy. Good luck to you in the future.

Jay: Although I agree with much of what you have said -- some people here are definitely xenophobic and unwelcoming to new comers -- I don't believe that is unique to Somerset. There are many small towns across the country who have the same mindset, including in the deep south. That said, would you really want to have a close friendship with someone like that? We've lived here several years now and have made some wonderful friends. It's true, most are transplants like us, but when you get down to it, these are the people we have the most in common with -- they are educated, well read, travel frequently and are generous of spirit. Likely this is not as big an issue for us because we have lived most of our adult lives overseas where we were always the outsider. So, unless you want to run for public office, be president of the PTA or lead a civic organization, does it really matter who's in you personal circle of friends?
