I could not believe my eyes when today's paper has Emeritus Mardis apologizing to the public for the paper telling people to call 911 if they need help. Does the paper give him full authority to make such a dangerous statement, not to call 911. It was all because he didn't get his way for them to call the electric company that his power was out. He says he almost 79, it sound more like a 7 year old crying and throwing a fit. But this is not the first time he did this when HE DIDN'T get his way. He should run for mayor.

My father is in his 90's and he keeps a flashlight at his chair and by his bed. If the lights go out and he sees others out in the neighborhood, he simply sits back and relaxes til someone else calls the electic company. 911 is for emergencies, expecially during a tornado warning with hundreds of homes electric out, BUT I forgot his excuse. "I am an employee of the Commonwealth Journal and this would be a great editorial". What a childish joke. The true Manager of the paper needs to take some action. What a joke the paper is to continue garbage.

Did he think that because he worked at the Commonwealth Journal that his electric should be a priority to anyone else in the county that pays an electric bill? And is your electricity being off an emergency? One would think that an employee of the home town newspaper might call 911 to see if there was an storm damage reported or anyone injured that might be newsworthy. But tried and true once again the newspaper is used to carry out a temper tantrum. I would never dream of calling a 911 center during a tornado warning and ask them to call an electric company for me. That just seems to be an abuse to the system. Did they have to put someone having a heart attack or other medical emergency on hold to tend to his trivial power outage? There was plenty of 'warning time' given to this county about storms approaching, and one might assume that a person should be prepared for what the weather holds. So Mr. Mardis, if I were you I would take my own advice, and DON'T call 911 unless you have a REAL emergency.

The "Humble Reporter" should've done whut I done - Pulled that ol' straw tick up overn his ol' bald haid and sleeped right thru hit - Works every time - BTW , this is the second time I've actually enjoyed his writing - I'm not always right , but seldom wrong - Recall when there was a very small comment on the front page of the paper asking people to not be placing slanderous accusations against a very prominent businessman - That's twice he's spoken out - And both times it was very self serving -

Anyone interested in the follow up needs to read the paper today. I laughed so hard it hurt when a person responded to yesterdays editorial.

I guess he thinks he is a high priority because of his hillbilly rantings in the newspaper.

I agree, this column that Bill Mardis di was so stupid, 911 is not for reporting lights out, I would never think of doing that..you call the utility company, not 911, they are too busy in a storm with all of the other problems such as auto accidents, lightning strikes causing fires, Had he not listened to the news or read a newspaper to know that a storm was coming. It is obvious that he was not a Boy Scout or he would have been more prepared. Maybe he feels too important to follow rules..get a grip Bill before you pen the next editorial.

Around here 911 is called for everthing.I sold a man a gun last week at the flea maket guess who he called to run the numbers.911
Alot of older people just don't know are don't understand.now this is abuse of the sytem but alot live alone and you can't teach a old dog new tricks.as forthis person in the paper I just think he is like alot of other people in this town use to getting there way and when they don't they call foul.
This town hasn't grown out of it's people with power and money and family name getting them anything they want are need.if you'er grandfather was so and so you learn to expect certain things.from a early age now the very people complaining are the ones that are getting out of those speeding tickets becouse you know are you'er family knows someone in the courthouse.
I have lived in somerset all my life.I know as well as others do were certain last names will get you whatever you want here on good ole pat you on the back somerset ky.now do you really want to get into that I wouldn't think so it's all about who you know and who you'er grandfather was and how much money you got weather you have to use that money are not if you have it it will still get you along way here.I'm just a poor boy but I know the system and seen it work

Could someone let Bill Mardis know there are storms forecast starting possibly on Sat. If anyone has an extra flashlight, phonebook and pen or pencil maybe they could drop it off at the Commonwealth Journal for him........I beleive that is where he said he worked!!! One more thing, attach note telling him, unlike RECC, KU does not provide a direct number for 911 to contact in case of a "real emergency"!!!!!

Mr Mardis, who are you going to call when you do have a real emergency? I will feel safe to assume in a fit of panic you will dial 911, and they will answer your call and help you with your emergency in a professional manner. They will not write a letter to the editor that you were not a "good caller". NOr will they mock you if in fact your emergency is not such an emergency,i.e. your lights went out, they will hang up with you and go right into the next call which may in fact be an emergency. Rest assured, they will be there if and when you do ever really need them.

And since the "Humble Reporter seems to be afflicted with a large bowel obstruction , I suggest he NOT call 911 , butt ,(no pun intended), he call a plumber , or a proctologist , or Roto-Rooter - Thanx and HAND (have a nice day)-

Yes, I read the paper and the editorial was right on target. Selfish Bill Mardis should be held libel in a law suit if someone doesn't call 911 since he has apoligized for telling people in the paper to do it in the past and now they don't. Publisher Jack McNeely and Editor Ken Shmidheiser would be included in the law suit because they allowed and approved Mardis telling everyone not to call 911 for help. I always thought Shmidheiser was a good person. Not any more. He has done a disservice to every citizen in this region.

Mr Mardis made a statement that his complaint was worthy of an editorial. My thought on that would be that he might further investigate his dispute. Isn't that what reporters do? Maybe see both sides of the story. Have you Mr. Mardis ever experienced first hand what goes on in a 911 center when a bad storm or tornado is taking place? How many calls are coming in and how they are being sorted out in priority for the safety of the commmunity and the responders involved. I am sure it is a little more complex than you or I know. I can listen to a scanner and tell you that this involves a lot more than answering a telephone. You may have got your lights turned on a little sooner than an hour had you taken the advice of the dispatcher and called KU the first time you were advised to do so. All is well that ends well and you sir need something better to complain about or in reporters terms write about.

This is topix if you already didn't know it's for gossibe, lies, putting people down, and kicking them while there down.some people swear by it lonely house wifes, low lives, gossibers, and such rely on this instead of a newspaper.they talk about our local newspaper being bad yet they read this instead full of lies trying to destroy peoples lives.
I have seen some of the worse storyes lies bashing people hurtfull things anyone could ever say on some off these threads.at least the local newspaper trys.here it dosen't matter you can ruin someone good name without even useing you'er real name you can spread lies that will tear a family apart all in good fun right?
That is why I read topix everday instead of the local paper .also I get free Internet so there you go.keep on bashing a old man that has most likely worked more when he was a kid then most on here there whole intire lives.keep on kicking someone when there down and and bash him untill there is no room imstite that's topix at it's best

What a job these people do at 911 in time of need to each person when they call in for their emergencies. I dont think people realize how busy they really are at times. They are very dedicated people. Dont think for a minute things dont bother them they deal with not just at the moment but for sometime to come.
