According to folk lore it means we are in for a very rough winter.

Lovely now I have to buy a coat. I have not had to wear nothing more than a jacket in a few years.

It's my understanding that the color predicts the winter to come. Brown(reddish) color meaning mild and black meaning bad. However these colors are on the worm is how our winter is suppose to be.

Well, if I had any wolly worms in my Begonias during the past couple of nights, they have already frozen to death.

My poor Begonias....

I haven't seen any black ones this year, I've seen a few reddish ones wandering around on my back deck, though.

the ones I have seen have been black on the end tips, and long light brown in the middle. No solid black. Lay off the booze.

The ones I've seen at home have been the reddish brown middle with black ends too. But have you noticed how many have been crawling on the road? I've seen the solid black ones on the road. The other morning I took my kids to school and I was trying to dodge them.(I was on back roads. I wasn't being reckless.) I didn't want to squish all of those wooly worms.LOL

It's been awhile, but I remember seeing some with the yellow. They were striped like bumble bees. I don't know and I haven't heard if the yellow has any bearing on predicting the weather. But still the same, most of enjoy watching the wooly worms, no matter what the color is! I hope everybody reading has a good day!
