Congrats to Somerset and PC on impressive 1st round wins in the playoffs? What happened with SW? Not ready or just thought if they won the first time they could breeze thru this time? Anyone at that game?

I am shocked too, You mean to tell me SW Choked again? I would never of guessed it........ Have been at almost every SW game this year and most of the last 3 years. The Defense played good enough to win. D only gave up 14 points on (2) short field drives set up by stupid play calling! The 3rd score was an INT return, by my count the 7th of the year from Turpin. I dont know what goes on toward the end of the year, every season but clearly the common theme is Dale Anderson choking. Now I understand that he has been hurt and not able to fully be on the sidelines this year, but whats the excuse the last 10 years...? Is it time for a head coaching change at SW?

I don't think I would go as far as replacing the Only FB Head Coach SWHS has ever had, but I would suggest a change or two in the assistant positions...Coach A is the hardest working high school coach I have ever known...Maybe he takes on too much responsibility where he should be able to get better support from his Staff...You CANNOT do it all Coach...A very visible lack of Fan support was very evident last night whereas Harlon Co. had more support than the Home Team. There was a Prinicipal and Athletic Director change at SWHS this year.I think there was a lack of School Spirit. No pep rallies...Assistant Coaches are ALOOF and cause massive damage to the Fan base and the Players alike. Alot of the Warrior Nation has fell along the way-side. My advice to Coach would be to make a few quality changes to his Staff and delegate some of the respnsibility he so willingly shoulders himself. I realize this day it is NOT easy to find good help, but for the Program's survival, Changes must be made...

Gator you are right about the coaching changes that needs to be done, but i don't think Coach A will make the right changes. I was at the game and they had a pretty decent crowd. The crowd don't play the game though. We had as many at out game as PC did and PC still won the game. The boys played hard all night it was just the play calling in my opinion. Coach A needs to change some things i think.

Coordinator that controls defensive plays and he does a good job. Coach is set in an offensive mode that ALL opposing Coaches have fingered. I wish he would get an offensive coordinator whom he could rely on, with the tenacity as Coach JG. Coach has build the program and raised the money needed to get alot of benefits for ALL SWHS Kids. To change him out would be a loss to all and a sorely unjust move. Things are FINE with a few adjustments and changes needed. We have a young team with the sophomore class being the most talented I have seen at SWHS.Today is actually the first day of the 2010 season. Lets see if Coach does infact make a tweeks and head these Kids to the State 2 years...Good luck Coach and the Warrior Nation...

I am SW fan and don't want to bash but just tell it like myself and all of the die hards in the stands see it. This is one reason so many players have quit the program. It is predictable, boring and frustrating. A coach has to adjust to his talent, not the other way around.
Coach A works hard and the kids love him but he has to come into modern day play calling.
Out offense is limited to a few plays and predictable. Everyone in the stadium, including the opposing teams knows what we are going to run. We try to run two plays up the middle and then pass on 3rd and long. Then at the end of the game, when we are desperate, we pass on every play. The defense brings the house and we get sacked or throw and interception.
Every team we play runs the majority of their offense out of the shotgun and we rarely do. Why not?
Turpin has thrown several interceptions, but you have to be at the games to see how he is having to scramble and throw on the run almost every play. He did pass for the only touchdowns SW scored in the last two games of the season.
Mote, Floyd and Powell are good running backs but have nowhere to go up the middle. The SW line got abused the last three games of the season and only scored one rushing touchdown in the last three games.
In the Rock game two weeks ago, we couldn't run up the middle so the assistant coaches began to call several pitch plays to the backs and short passes. Look what happened. We won and the players and fans loved the excitement.
Then, last night, same old crap.
For the good of the program, Coach A needs to change his play calling or turn the offense over to someone who actually understands offense.

Well, the sophmore class does have some talent that is coming up, I will agree. But Old Coach had alot of talent that he wasted in his senior/junior class. Zach Fowler was not utilized as often as he could have been on offense. Alex Jones, should have been used as a receiver. Blake Tuttle, should have been seen running the ball. But that is just the way this program works. Coach will pick one or two players and try to build the program around them and try to make them the "stars" of the team even if it doesn't seem to be working week after week. It is a concern when our program didn't have enough boys turn out to form a freshman team. It makes me laugh a bit when you talk about the talent of your sophomore class. Talk to me when they are at their senior year and have endured 2 years of this program. Will they still have a love for the game? As for the coaching staff, again only my opinion. BUT, at the rockcastle game, the Assistant Coaches were there making the calls. They adjusted the offense and opened up the playbook. And guess what? They won. The team was pumped up and excited as well as the fans. Then Coach comes back to playoffs and same junk, we lose. I don't think he should have been calling in plays. If you noticed we got two delay of game penalties, because Coach was in his cart calling plays to the assistant coach who then called it out to Turpin who then ran out to the huddle. Coach this loss is on you.

That group of sophmores was beaten on their own field by Somerset's sophmore class. They have to get past Highlands to even get to the State.

I actually think Southwestern overacheived this year and a first round playoff loss shouldn't be a big deal--they are a year ahead of schedule.
That being said what is Coach Anderson's problem in the playoffs. They seemingly are the most talented local team each season with several players receiving D-1 scholarships but take a look at the numbers.
Coach Anderson is 103-79 overall but only 7-14 in the playoffs with 0 regional titles. Now that the program is built perhaps they should get a coach that can take what is there and do more with it.

Yes, SW lost Friday night. But the problems are mentioned in these posts. But from the 1st Harlan game to this one, is the same as in the last 9 years. From game 1 to game 10, 11, 12, or 13th(2006) the team never gets better. They have to much attriton from the team each season, making it more difficult to practice. Or maybe they quit, because they are just practice dummies, I don't know. Little to no substitution pattern on offense and defense, then tries to play kids on special teams to get them minutes (last years PC game) it just don't work this way. Larry French turned Lincoln Co. around 3 yrs. ago, now look at them this season. He is at Boyle Co. with an 11-0 season with a great chance to win state. He cut players at Lincoln, and this year at Boyle. So the diehard fans can say that Coach A needs to tweak here and there, but the bottom line is it is the Coach, and his staff that the boys will look up to and play hard for. But not for this staff anymore. It is time for a change, new blood, new beliefs, new goals of winning state, not just getting bingo tab sellers to bingo twice a week.

Third round or higher...Heading towards respectibility at a higher competitive level. I realize that to play in the Finals would be the ultimate. Not once did I state that SWHS was destined to become State Champs in 5-A. Though it is a pleasant thought. All High School programs encourage thir teams to dream of the RING. What in your realm of wisdom is wrong with that?
