When Girdler was asked why $7000.00 was given to the Family Fitness Center, or Alton Blakley YMCA if you ask me....his response was that he "Assumes it was for health/safety repairs, since that is what is stipulated in the lease". Excuse me, but isn't it his job to know exactly what that money went for? Not to mention that is was an unprofessional response and kinda of condescending. Is there anyway to get an itemized list of these so called "health/safety" repairs and who do we contact to get that? Sounds like a bunch of BS to me and I refuse to pay for the Blakley's screw up.

This is crazy!! The city helped them out when they were about to loose the place and now they still dishing money out. When is enough......enough? I think its about time they cut the purse strings. I am not sure on who to contact to see a itemized list, but I would think that should be public record. I would actually love to see where it says in the contract that they are responsible for all the repairs at the Y. I thought that when it was first done it was done as a underwriting on a loan to extend the time limit on the principal due. Also when this was done it was also stated that there was to be no public funds used in saving the y.

http://somerset-kentucky.com/letters/x6815544...

go to that link and read what was stated after the loan agreement

I am wondering can the y be made pay back the government for all the assistance they have received. Or will they just find more ways to cover it up have the y pay it back but the city somehow find a way to give it back to them. Maybe purchasing and paying for memberships for employees or board members? I am sure they will all figure something out to cover it up. I myself am tired of paying for everyone else.

I worked for the engineering company that did the ymca originally, it takes money to upkeep, have you priced an hvac unit or a commercial water heater lately, not cheap, it should be self supporting though, then if not county should step in, but in these hard times who knows what to do, it will eventually pay for itself, it was built in a terrible location

How typical! You complain a blue streak about every dime the federal government spends on bailouts, but when it comes to local government bailing out failed enterprises it's "who knows what to do." Anyone who expected the Y to be self sustaining is a fool. It's all about saving the hides of the good ole' boys and their buddies.

Throwing names around? Only person I mentioned was you, and your eagerness to support Girdler (oops there's another name) and his cronies by wasting the tax payer's moneny. Sure can tell which side your cookie's buttered on. Oh and I take it your real name is "blameitonbush"? Is that a family name? Are you sure you're not a Democrat? I thought they were the only ones who supported bailouts. What a duffus!

The Y is an embarrassment in more ways than one. As stated it is in a bad location. At least the old Y brought people to the downtown area. It does have more of a snobby country club feel to it and the money should not come from tax payers unless tax payers agree to it beforehand. As far as Girdler...just remember to say NO TO INCUMBENTS during the next elections.

It is not the blakely family ymca, once the YMCA needed help, the county did nothing, it was the city that stepped in. I may not agree with the way a lot of things are being handled in the city govt. or our fed. govt. But I know why the city stepped in, the fitness center is a wonderful place for those who use it.
Where else could our kids be on a swim team and compete, for the eldery and arthritic to go and have aquatic exercise classes, or swimming lessons for the kids.
Just because someplace that could greatly benifit our community had poor managment which brought it down, does not mean we should turn our backs on it and let it just go away. Then you would just be turning your backs on our community.

Well if you want to support them then open your pocket but im sick and tired of this stuff coming out of my pocket and me not having a so-so it isn't fair for the 60,000 people in Pulaski County to have to pay for something that maybe 2,000 people utilize.

I for one think if it's such a wonderful asset and they are having trouble paying for this and that then raise the prices. Have the ones that use it pay for it not the ones that don't. There is a lot of people in Pulaski that have to watch every nickel and dime they have and go from pay day to pay day. Why should their tax money be used to support something they can't even afford to go too?

Last I read the city has money in the bank, millions, so in this economy where citys are crumbling with no jobs, be thankful we live where we do.
Besides, your taxes have not been raised so why the b!tchn about the Y, did you b!tch about the cost of the library and the taxes that were taken for that, it's a huge library and last time I was in there, there were so many empty shelves, yet when I tried to donate books they didn't want to help me carry them in or even let me use a book cart to roll them in. Then no, thank you or gratitude for a trunk full of like new books.

That's what is so funny about this sight, you get people who start rumors, those who feed off them and those who just need something to complain about.
Be thankful you do live in Detroit, or Dayton places where the unemployment rate is higher then 12%, places where there are truely no jobs, buisnesses and factories that kept those cities going have shut down and moved out. We are blessed becaue the sucky economy has not effected Pulaski County like it has many other less fortunate places.
I'm sorry but I worry more about the national debt, immigration reform, and praying out fed govt. doesn't F this country up even more. Instead of worrying about the local YMCA.

The library is for anyone to use, and it's free. So big difference in something that is free for 60,000 to use, then something that cost 60 plus for a family a month.

As of August 6, 2009 the YMCA of Somerset Ky became SOMERSET FAMILY FITNESS CENTER, INC.--a non profit corporation. There is NO YMCA. The CEO is David Mead, the Treasurer is James Ramsey, and the other director is D. Bruce Orwin.

It doesn't matter if it is free, both places provide a service, and the fitness center provides discounted fees for lower income families. A place to those out of town to come when swimming compatitons are being held, which also means they eat here and spend thier money here in somerset.
Books, magizines and newspapers will slowly fade into non-existance in the future that will be just another empty building in somerset go along with all the others.
There is only a small % of people who use the library reguarly.
The have a nice children's graden and they offer summer activities during the day, but those of us who work can't utilize those services, because we're at work. Only offering service m-f 8-4 keeps those of us who work and pay the taxes unable to benifit from thier services.
