Greenfield files lawsuit against Monterey County Elections Department
The city of Greenfield said it has filed a lawsuit against the Monterey County Elections Department in connection to a referendum concerning shared law enforcement services with a neighboring city. Interim City Manager Brent Slama said the lawsuit was filed Feb. 15, seeking the removal of the referendum from the June 5 ballot when voters will be asked whether an agreement should be entered with Soledad to share police services for cost-cutting purposes. Slama said they plan to pursue shared police services if the court sides with the city. On Tuesday, he said, the Greenfield City Council will also consider adopting a resolution to place on the June ballot the recall of Mayor John Huerta Jr. Slama said the council has previously adopted similar resolutions for the recalls of its members Yolanda Teneyuque and John Martinez. The group, 'Reunify Greenfield,' which opposed the city's plans to share its police department with Soledad's, was behind the referendum campaign which saw enough signatures collected to qualify being on the ballot. The group was also behind the recall campaign of Teneyuque and Martinez. A separate group in the community is spearheading the recall effort against Huerta Jr.
