I think the author of this rant has confused an "800 pound gorilla" with a scapegoat. The elephant in the room (which goes unaddressed by your ill-informed comments) is why individuals would harm each other in the first place: lack of parental and community support. Those things can (in large part) be attributed to lack of economic opportunity, not the existence of handguns. Gangs and bullies existed long before gunpowder. This commentary shows a distinct ignorance of cause-and-effect, history, and (worse) an apparent but unsupported confidence.

Instead of trying to outlaw tools one doesn't understand, or bully people into accepting one's limited view of the world, perhaps the author's time would be better spent volunteering in some of these impoverished areas, listening to and trying to understand the community's needs, and providing the support these kids need to understand why harming others is inappropriate before they have an opportunity to do so.

Side-note: Can anyone identify the author of this piece? As far as I can see, this editorial has no by-line....

No the elephant in the room is the Drug War... If we were to shut down the black market with regulated sale the profits that fuel bloodshed in our streets would mostly disappear. We should not have to pay billions of dollars a year to keep drug users that use in a manner not posing danger to others incarcerated. We dont need laws to tell us its a foolish idea to shoot up heroin or smoke a rock of crack..

Humans have used mind-altering substances since the beginning. It will NEVER stop. They can't even keep drugs out of maximum security prisons! They will NEVER keep drugs off our streets. Making/keeping them illegal only creates violence and wastes money imprisoning a "supposedly FREE" individual for a "crime" that had no victim- sometimes for life.
