Much like entering the surf as a swimmer or a surfer here in Southern California - Sharks exist - they can do great harm but that does not stop thousands from going into the water every day. In a like manner, Alaskan bears are capable of killing people. Recently an Alaskan hunter killed what was truly a HUGE bear (14 feet Tall) that was charging him from 50 feet away. Had he not been armed there is nothing he could have done to prevent a successful predatory attack upon his person. Upon further investigation that bear had the remains of two people in its stomach (one set of remains were found and the other to date has not been found). That bear had at least 4 pistol wounds from one of the victims he had killed.

Bears like sharks exist. We must learn to deal with these creatures in the same manner we deal with electricity, or operating a car, flying a plane, mountain climbing or any activity that is dangerous.

The California Grizzly was every bit as big as the largest bears in Alaska. Remember Salmon runs, Tule Elk, mild climate contibuted to a huge well fed bear population that did not go into hibernation. Oh, may I add, IT WAS A TOP PREDATOR - the California "Golden" Bear knew no enemy it could not defeat - it had no fear.
