"Wagon" is one analogy.
The correct analogy has to do with the foundation:
1Cr 3:11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
Luk 6:49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."
2Ti 2:19 But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity."

The " foundation" is solid and unshakeable.
The weakness lies in those who build upon it, expounding and aspiring to emulate The creator while building towards the heavens ever higher and
higher.
You should be humbled by your existence. God is capable of recruting his own followers in many faiths.
You remind of someone who wants only himself to shine and rise into the heavens.
Kinda like the "twin towers" of religion.
..... But we all know what happened to those....

“off the AA wagon” is one metaphor and in this case, a very poor and miscalculated assumption.
These writings instead have everything to do with the metaphor of a solid “foundation”:

Luk 6:46-49
"Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."

May The Holy Spirit lead you to the truth in all matters!
Blessings,

Remember,
The CR teaching above all boasts about how it is “Bible based” and “Christ centered”.
When one studies what is actually taught direct from the CR text,(and I did because after a couple of years being directly involved, I almost started my own meeting) the truth of these comments proves something quite different from their boasts.

How is this Christ centered or Biblically based?:
CR 342 “The solution is to become your own loving parent….You will recover the child within you, learning to accept and love yourself.”

And this is a humanistic and biblically FALSE statement:
CR 350 “Jesus taught….A love of self forms the basis for loving others…

Look closely (study), honestly (void of prejudice) and truthfully (Scripture as final authority) at what is taught. The actual teaching is heavily marbled with psychobabble non-sense and scripture distortions (including forcing non-Biblical concepts onto a handful of scriptures taken out of context) how then anyone could possibly call this Bible based or Christ centered?
Jesus did not teach any of this, not anything even close!
Nor His disciples!
We are warned, so clearly, never to run ahead of The Lords teachings [2 John 1:9-11], nor add to [Deuteronomy 4:2], subtract from [Jeremiah 8:8-9] nor leave out Gods Words at all [Mat 28:20] When any one of these tests is discarded, the truth is not present [Mat 15:9]

A reminder of what a true believer/follower and worshiper of Jesus can rely on, The Holy Spirit:
-Galatians 5:22-24 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
-Phl 4:13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
-2Ti 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.
-Col 2:9-10 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority...

I suggest trusting Jesus with everything and go to Him directly, unencumbered by any man-made religious approaches: programs; steps; principles; guidelines; methods; techniques; factions; systems; philosophies; platforms; doctrines; psychologies; etc.
What I have witnessed, when one is truly following The Lord, there is no longer room for any consideration to follow any man-made steps. If it is the real Jesus,[He] will make you a new creation, you will be born again,[He] will fill you up to over flowing,[He] will cancel all sin debts and free you from the past,[He] will… Behold! All things are new!

2Cr 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

Only a servant pointing towards Jesus only,

Brian,

First of all it's great to see you are still alive and well as I haven't seen or heard from you in years. Do you remember me?

Second, most of what you say (Biblically) in many ways I agree with, what concerns me is why you seem to hate and go after Celebrate Recovery with such a vengence. You must know by now I think it's a good program, but that's all it is - a program, a tool if you will by which christians can come together with a structure designed to build relationships of accountability, supportt, etc. It, in and of itself will not save anyone but it as with many "tools" or "books" or "resources" that the church uses is designed to draw christians (and non-christians alike) in and point them to Christ. As a tool, it is not the "answer", I agree. The only thing that will set each of us free from whatever addiction or ongoing sin we may suffer from is (and here it is - THE ANSWER) Our daily ongoing closeness to Christ and committment to Him trough the salvation we accept from Him, provided by Him the the blood that He shed on the cross for us, thus paying the price once and for all for that sin, whatever it may be. Your right, Christ and our closeness and committment to Him, is the answer. CR is just a tool, not to be glorified as the answer. A tool, like a bible study book. Our personal closeness and committment to Christ through our salvation through Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit. I do understand what you are saying my friend and brother but think there are better battles you can pick for the glory of God's kingdom.

Anyway, would love to see you again sometime if your interested maybe we can get together for coffee or something.

Jim,
perhaps because of the time span, I do not remember your name. Below is an excerpt from:
"Recovery Awareness"
http://megas-houtos-agape.blogspot.com
These comments are backed by in-depth study and extensive first hand experience. And yes, it does require one to open The Bible (a real Bible/non-paraphrased) and study all the scripture in context(contexts)
----------
There is an obvious problem with all twelve step including celebrate recovery’s new latter day healing approach; it is much more than simply eclecticism, it is a syncretism that is an antithesis towards sound Biblical doctrine. This new 12 step faith goes directly against what the Bible teaches [2Cr5:17][Phl3:13][Col3:2][Rom 6:11][Rom8:14][Gal5:24]. Warren openly states "'everybody needs recovery' and 'these are the very word of Jesus'", another words everyone is spiritually incomplete without this man-made 12 step program [Pro30:6]; These statements are absolute lies promoting faith in this man-made program above Jesus himself. CR is more than simply a weak, distorted gospel, this teaching is void of all sound contextual understanding and is a most serious distortion of the original intent of the scriptures [2Cr4:2]. CR distorts the use of scriptures and also incorporates the 12 steps of alcoholics anonymous [2Pe2:1], both of these heresies are exactly what we are warned about in God’s word [1Cr3:11][2Cr4:2]. Just because the name Jesus is stamped all over this new syncretism, that wrongful branding will never make it of The Lord [Mat7:21].
----------
Please understand that God calls sinners like me to repent, not recover - for crying out loud! there is nothing to recover!! Not one person on earth ever had anything to recover!!! The entire Bible is void of any form of the concept of recovery!!!!
Act 17:30 "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent...
Here, we are given a absolutely wonderful promise:
Act 3:19 "Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord...
I know, and now understand about the truth of this verse with the promises. If you want to be refreshed by The Lord's very presence AND your sins totally "wiped away", according to the Bible there is only one way and all of the recovery steps and principles and everything else can never achieve it. "Therefore repent and return" says The Lord, this is all it takes. No steps, no meetings, no sponsors and especially no distorted scripture, just Jesus only and exclusively. Anything else is a lie.
Psa 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!
Only a servant, only pointing to Jesus,
Brian

Listen, if you don't like AA, don't go, but there are about 2 million recovering alcoholics that would probably be dead if they were trying to get sober through religion alone. AA is not about saving souls, it's about saving alcoholics lives. If church had been enough to keep alcoholics sober, AA would have never been formed. For me, the verdict has not come in for the Celebrate Recovery thing, and I honestly don't think mixing religion and recovery is the best idea, but hey, who am I to say. One of the fundamental principles of 12 Step recovery is the ability to have a God of your understanding, so I'm not sure the removal of that foundational element has the same impact.

I was involved in CR for nearly 3 years and have broken away from its false religion and teachings. I am praying for God to lead me in His Way of how to approach my former ministry leaders with a humble and gentle spirit that can only come from Him. My flesh screams out and just wants to blow the warning trumpet into their ears but this would not bring glory to our Father. Almost daily now I get text messages from my former sponser where Scripture is used seemingly as a weapon aimed at me. Bottom line is, I have an incline to believe that CR is poisoned by the Jezebel spirit. As I reseached this spirit, I got a text from former sponsor using Rev2:19 so I read my KJV this verse and those following. Jezebel is named in the following sentence! This is a very powerful whore of satan but she is no match for the real Jesus. Prepare ye the way of the Lord! Those involved in ministry, just as I was fooled, believe they are doing the work of Jesus but He opened my eyes even though I thought I was no longer blind, hallelujah! Please pray for those who fall so easily into the subtlety laid foundation based on man made and satanic doctrines. God will give us over to our itching ears and we ought be praying for His Mercy, softened hearts, open eyes and ears. If you can, check out another ministry called The Most Excellent Way, it seems to be Biblically based and believe we are healed from sin of addictions only by Jesus, no steps, just one leap of faith and repentance. Jesus Saves! May God bless you

Brian, I am so thankful for you and for your research. I just finished spending a year serving and leading at one of the biggest and first Celebrate Recoverys in Oklahoma. I completed the 12 step program, served as a greeter, usher, and helped lead what is called "The Landing", that's CRs version of their program for teens. I can honestly say with a heavy hard that not only did I waste my time but CR did absolutely NOTHING to better me as a person and it certainly did not bring me closer to Christ. I could list tens of hundreds of things wrong with CR but Brian has covered most of them. For starters, power hungry leaders that say they want to train up newer leaders but the newer, younger leaders are only allowed to lead to a certain extent. I saw this happen numerous times. Money, money, and more money is a constant. It's one thing for CR goers to offer to donate an offering but when we are selling books, t-shirts, and other CR merchandise because after all CR is a franchise (they actually are not afraid to announce this), it becomes obvious that this is why they preach "YOUR NEVER DONE WITH RECOVERY". See folks, as a former drug user and alcoholic myself (4 years clean, yea!) I simply got the rehab I needed, then I got the recovery needed, and then I GOT ON WITH MY LIFE!!! What I just said in that last sentence, is Rick Warren and John Bakers worst nightmare. If Celebrate Recovery participants only used CR temporarily, then Rick Warren can't make money! Do you see it yet people? For the Celebrate Recovery money machine to keep rolling, you have to trick people into thinking they have to come for the rest of their lives, so they can keep buying T-Shirts, and CR bibles, and don't forget your CR bumper stickers. CR=Franchise=Business=$$$. I couldn't believe how many people I saw that had gone through the CR 12 step program, 6,7, even 10 times! It takes an average of 9-12 months to get through it one time. I'll just say this and I won't say anything else on this post...If you keep doing the same thing over and over and over again (CR 12 step program) and it's not working then hmmmm....maybe it's time to try a different approach. I apologize if I offend anyone with this post, but the truth needs to be shared. I wasted a year and a half of my life on this program and I don't want to see anyone else waste theirs. Amen.

Hi Bob

Here is a copy/paste that I think answers your question "were is the true church" nicely and I hope this may help you!
This one is found on the site: http://www.gotquestions.org/what-is-the-churc...

Question: "What is the church?"

Answer: Many people today understand the church as a building. This is not a biblical understanding of the church. The word “church” comes from the Greek word ekklesia which is defined as “an assembly” or “called-out ones.” The root meaning of “church” is not that of a building, but of people. It is ironic that when you ask people what church they attend, they usually identify a building. Romans 16:5 says “… greet the church that is in their house.” Paul refers to the church in their house—not a church building, but a body of believers.

The church is the body of Christ, of which He is the head. Ephesians 1:22-23 says,“And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” The body of Christ is made up of all believers in Jesus Christ from the day of Pentecost (Acts chapter 2) until Christ’s return. The body of Christ is comprised of two aspects:

1) The universal church consists of all those who have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.“For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink”(1 Corinthians 12:13). This verse says that anyone who believes is part of the body of Christ and has received the Spirit of Christ as evidence. The universal church of God is all those who have received salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

2) The local church is described in Galatians 1:1-2:“Paul, an apostle … and all the brothers with me, to the churches in Galatia.” Here we see that in the province of Galatia there were many churches—what we call local churches. A Baptist church, Lutheran church, Catholic church, etc., is not the church, as in the universal church—but rather is a local church, a local body of believers. The universal church is comprised of those who belong to Christ and who have trusted Him for salvation. These members of the universal church should seek fellowship and edification in a local church.

In summary, the church is not a building or a denomination. According to the Bible, the church is the body of Christ—all those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ for salvation (John 3:16; 1 Corinthians 12:13). Local churches are gatherings of members of the universal church. The local church is where the members of the universal church can fully apply the “body” principles of 1 Corinthians chapter 12: encouraging, teaching, and building one another up in the knowledge and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Yes, everything u r saying is true. I have taken a step back from CR & AA, only to find that i am taking steps toward Christ. These are the only "steps" i need, rather than some manmade legalistic doctrine. No, people do not study anymore. This is the age of Facebook. Unfortunately, folks believe what they see in a meme. I am a psychologist, not that it matters, only pointing out that I'd take the Lord's word over man's study of the psyche any day! One comment tho: i believe that the Serenity Prayer intends to mean that we are powerless ALONE without accepting the Spirit of God. What do u think??

Great little article, and thanks for all the links to other discussions on this subject. I've always looked at Celebrate Recovery with a very high degree of suspicion (simply because it came from Warren) but am only just now looking into it a little deeper.
As for the comments, I always giggle at the ones judging a writer as judgmental, issuing condemnation for their condemning actions, and being intolerant of their intolerance. Where has rational thought and a jealousy for the Word of God gone? Makes me shake my head.
Thanks again for an interesting read.
