No comments anymore? Why the secrecy?

What secret? The Seal's came straight from Newgate, England and they are not Melungeon. I don't know enough about the history of the Greene's but the first one in this county was Jeremiah, buried over at Trent Valley if I remember right. There are no Byington's in Hancock County. I know some in Hamblen. Where does the Melungeons come in? The above is documented and researched.

You are correct shadow13. There are some Byington's in Hawkins County But I have been here all my life and as far as I know there are none here. The name Seal and Greene were never names that were associated With the Melungeons.

I will start off with Newgate. Are you familiar with the history of the prison? Just bacause the ancestry search says that someone came fron England does not mean that the people were of English blood. The Kings and Queens ruled over many places which made the people their subjects no matter where it was or what color. Thus many were granted English names or titles and lands. My grandmother was a Seals and her mother was a Greene. I do know that the Greenes are mentioned many times associated with the Melungeon people. You may have done your research but, I also have done mine. I have not had access to my family tree book as they were all destroyed or hidden due to some of my people being ashamed of their roots. I am not. I cannot help what my people did. Why should I hide? I contacted my cousin who lives at Tennessee who had moms book. He LOST it of course. In the course of our conversation he did say that we were from Barbados. Do you know anything about Barbados? Fascinating bit of history. Some of the Greenes were insane. Who is left to pick up the pieces? I am one. I descended from Jeremiah GreeneIII and Anne Hartley but that does not make me all English. Many came here as criminals and indentured servants. I am a mix of many races yet I have always been classified as Caucasian. I no longer list this as my race because that is not what I am. Like the Greenes I am stubborn and do not give up without a fight especially if it is something I believe in. Some kindhearted person ashamed of their roots had my earlier posts erased. I am still trying to obtain a family tree book. Why did the Greene and Jones War start? I know but, do you? Why were so many deserters when real war came? I was always told as a little girl that some things are not permitted to be talked about like there was something in the woodpile that should not have been there. I have some strange traits that came from these people. Maybe you too have some things that you wonder where they came from..... Oh, the Greenes are strong in my genes. I look just like my grandmother. I have a look that cannot be described. I have real long hair, hazel eyes, and my skin is never white. I have the classic Greene chin. The reason I was asking about the Byingtons was my mother married Samuel Byington fron Lee Co. Va. I noticed alot in my research that alot of people from there married people from what was once Hancock and Hawkins Counties but is now only Hancock. To the one I was talking to on here whose grandmother is my grandmothers sister: DO NOT LET OTHERS OFFEND OR SCARE YOU FROM TALKING. YOU CAN ONLY BE AS SCARED AS YOU WANT TO BE....... You are a true greene so stand up and be counted......

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints maintain this website. I was able to trace the English side of my family back to the 1600's using this site. I found quite a bit of info on my German ancestors as well. The site is free to use. It has been quite a while since I used the site-there was no registration at that time. Maybe it still is like that. Maybe this link will help you fill in some of the blanks.

What I was trying to tell you is I don't think being of Melungeon descent is looked upon badly by anyone now. There was a DNA profile done and it is clearly Portuguese, Turkish and Moorish extraction. The fact that their skin is darker is just like the people of India who are also Caucasoid, but darker skinned. I don't think anyone cares anymore, is what I mean. That is why I responded. Most people I know of Melungeon extraction are a very proud people.

Thank you for your info Shadow 13. I always knew that there was something about me that was different but I did not know how to trace things at the time. I was able to read moms family history when she obtained the Greene boOk but only glancing through it. She loaned it to her sisters son and now it is nowhere to be found. My aunt had one of her own yet he had to borrow moms. Someone put on here how I could obtain another one but someone had my posts removed. I must have hit a sore button. But, as I said I am a stubborn woman and I do not give up easily, Now why would I want to change that? My dad passed away when I was 11 and was raised by my mom. My mother had a deep inner strength and she gave that to me and I have tried to pass this on to my children. I raised 4 children alone and if I had been weak I never would have done it. I have been ill for many years and I know my illnesses were inherited from the Greenes. They DID INTERMARRY AND INTERMIX. That makes for problems. Some of them also had deep mental issues and unfortunately this was passed on.I am one of those it was passed on to. I would rather know what something is and be able to deal with it than to keep it hidden and never find answers. My uncle the late Honorable H. Clyde Pearson did not know of our history and was fascinated with it. I do know that Jim Jones put a curse on Dick Greene. I wish I knew what he said. I cannot stand this secrecy!!!! We have had many tragedies in our family. The one person was talking to me who is my cousin but others ran him off. My family and I are on Facebook and if you would like to talk to me anymore then you can send me a message. DEBBIE BYINGTON

Thank you! You have been really helpful. I am going to try and research the Seals. When you suffer with pain of unknown origin you get so tired and want help, whatever that help may be. Also, I inherited the gene for Duchenes Muscular Dystrophy. I passed it onto my daughter and she passed it onto her 2 boys. I was not aware that I carried anything like this. I am not on a quest to make people embarrased or feel bad. Look at Johnny Cash on You Tube "HURT" then you will understand my people. It fits us 100%.

We do not choose our ancestors. We have to take what life gives us and make the best life for ourselves that we can. Maybe what we have done will make a better life for those that come after us.

Thank you for not being rude. I just need answers about ilness. My ancestors were good people but they carried illness. When I am gone who will help the young ones? When young ones have their own families and sickness has came into their lives they need to know if possible what these sicknesses are. Two of my children in their twenties are ill and they have children. I try to help them by being the guinea pig if you will for the doctors. You try to tell the doctors about yourself and how you hurt and feel and like some on this forum they think you are CRAZY. I am not crazy just sick!!!

Iam like you Debbie. I have nothing to hide about my family and where they came from. I am part Seals, Trent, Greene, Coffee, Ogan. I have been working on a family tree on my side of the Greene's. I haven't found anything that says the Greene's and the Melungoun's mixed. Yes they did intermarry, the saying goes back then the Greene's didn't think anyone was good enough for them. They are our ancestors, if it wasn't for them we wouldn't be here.

My point exactly. I don't think the Seals,Greenes or Trent names were ever associated with the Melungeons. I am not saying anything to dissrespect the Melungeons.

Some people like to make up stories about there families. Be it to have an exciting past, brag to others so they can look good. Or have an excuse for some imaginary illness. Or they want to be part of something their not, and by calming such and such they hope to be excepted.
