Insularity is the foundation of ethnocentrism and intolerance; when you only know of those like yourself, it is easy to imagine that you are alone in the world or alone in being good and right in the world. Exposure to diversity, on the contrary, is the basis for relativism and tolerance; when you are forced to face and accept the Other as real, unavoidable, and ultimately valuable, you cannot help but see yourself and your 'truths' in a new - and trouble - way.

Oh dear! He used the word "relativism" which I KNOW is straight from the vocab of the Anti-Christ, according to fundamentalists. I am not an absolute relativist, I don't think, but I DO recognize that SOME judgements are relative to the group of people holding them.

It does sound like that, doesn't it? I just read an article in which it is said that the Repubs are going to dump the religious right. I think the GOP realizes they have wrung every last drop of usefulness from them , and now are going to "become more secular." I think it's hysterical. The GOP never DID care about abortion and gays OR God; they CARE about exploiting ignorance for their purposes. I think it's the ultimate poetic justice for all of the millions of self righteous cretins who carried their water for them though.

You nailed it. "The Party of God" could care less about religion just how many votes and sleazy cash donations they could get by pretending to be religious. I also heard they are going to lighten up on immigration reform because of the large hispanic vote. Total hypocrites. I guess the Democrates prayed harder than the republicans this past November.

Yeah, they're scrambling. They are losing in all demographics except the religious right and the old southern racists, and if they dump the Fundies and the oldies die off, who's left? Worries me about what's happening in the meantime though, like in Michigan and reproductive rights and ignoring climate change. IF we make it as a planet, there'll be a lot to undo! And Adelson says he will give the conservatives DOUBLE what he shelled out this time in the next election cycle. We ARE pretty damned stupid as a species.
