Now this is true.

If you don't have money, you probably do not want to live right in Atlanta, you would fair better in a nice suburb of Atlanta. I've live here for about 7 years now and that is the way I see it and it is what most Atlantians suggest to newcomers.

However, I do think that changes are beginning to happen in Atlanta again, considering that from what I've been told, they have torn down a large housing project(s) that were harboring troublemakers and criminals, the only thing is that I was also told that all of those people moved to places like Riverdale or Clayton County. They are trying to do something about there being a significant number of homeless people downtown.

I think that since the former Mayor is no longer in charge of Atlanta, people may actually see all that tax revenue raked in by Atlanta do some good, bring Atlanta back to how it was before there was so much crime in the city. The citizens of Atlanta should be demanding to see what ever dime of tax money was spent on over all these years that each Mayor since Maynard Jackson oversaw its decline. I think that Atlanta, just like MANY cities and towns across the country have had too many people in charge that were lining their own pockets while doing nothing for the city they were/are in charge of. I think a lot of bank accounts need to be disclosed going back many years in Atlanta that belong to the politicians running Atlanta.

Crooked Atlanta mayors have set the tone for the rest of Atlanta. Read this:

http://www.ajc.com/business/jury-finds-for-co...

As crooked as Maynard Jackson was his name should be removed from the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. He was almost as crooked as Campbell.

This is a good reminder that there are SOME great blacks out there. I wish there were more but they are truly a minority among minorities.

The CDC does show that the infant mortality rate of African American babies to be almost twice that of whites in this country overall, however, there is no greater average in Atlanta in particular, and even at a rate of about 13%(and I question those stats), even that high a percentage is no where near third world country rates. Besides, a majority of African Americans do quite well in Atlanta/Atlanta Metro, most are middle class, own their own homes, etc. I am sure that infant mortality rates differ amoung African Americans who are middle class and African Americans who are poor as well. Nevertheless, the overall infant mortality rate for the entire United States is extremely high and is the highest amoung developed countries and no better than some third world countries.

in 2004 Atlanta had the highest child poverty rate in the US,one of the reasons for this is that in 2005 Georgia had the 8th highest teen pregnancy rate in the US and the 2nd highest repeat teen pregancies rate http://chronicle.augusta.com/news/metro/2010-...

Yeah, but you have to understand how these stats were probably gathered. They probably interviewed teen-mothers who probably didn't have any income or very little as if they were truely head of household parents, while discounting the fact that 90% of them still lived at home with working parents or at least one working parent whose income was not counted.

Another way these stats are gathered is by averaging the incomes of teen-mothers actually on welfare; of course the amount of welfare received would automatically put them in or below the poverty line, however, it does not mean tht the teen-mother and her child(ren) are actually living in dire straits because large percentages of teen mothers still live at home with parents who take up the slack.

Look what we have feeding into this from the government side. Teachers and school principals cheating on standardized tests to give the kids and edge? Oh no, they are cheating ONLY to preserve their jobs. They don't give a crap about the kids, they are just cattle to them. What use is hiding a failing child? It surely won't help the child to advance with an artificial score. And now that the schools have been caught and the testing heavily monitored the failures have gone up more than 3 times. Why did they cover this up? Because the personnel in the school are not performing and using the inflated scores to keep the numbers looking good so they don't attract attention to the REAL problem. Instead of being suspended these principals are reassigned, which means they are still getting paid when they should be getting sued by the parents, city and state. Of course pushing the issue like that, even though we as Americans are within our right to do so, will be labeled as "Racism". Because not following rules and regulations is now a race issue, especially with union-protected school personnel. They screw our children to keep their wallets safe, so I don't care what color they are. They belong in jail. CF

I moved to Atlanta 7 months ago and I will be moving in a couple of months. The majority of the country views this city as the black mecca. There is still a slavery mentality in Atlanta. Your skin complexion dictates the way you are treated. There is a small percentage of African Americans who are wealthy, but there are more people trying to live the same life that the wealthy African Americans live. A couple of weeks ago I was listening to the radio and the radio personality was talking about a woman he saw walking through the mall with a gucci bag that was a year old. This city is so shallow and superficial. There is no real black unity that's just what image has been publicized to the rest of the country. There is a reason why some people say the dirty south. I enjoy listening to variety of different music, but the music scene is not very diverse. I am 29 and I retired four years ago. I have a house in Alpharetta and I am single. A lot of people don't understand how I can live here without a job or husband. I have encountered so much jealousy, envy, and hostility. I will be so happy when I relocate.

yes there's wealthy teen moms i.e Bristol Palin and Jamie Spears but most of the teen pregnancy is poor teens that are the children of poor parents often single parents i.e. one income families.

There has been so much migration to the 28 counties surrounding Atlanta in the last couple of decades, that it's actually not as segregated as other large cities. You totally can't make any assumptions about a person simply by their zip code. In mid town, you can have section 8 renters and yuppies living in the same building on the same floor. In Dekalb or Cobb county, you can have million dollar McMansions on one side of the road and a trailer park on the other side. We're all one big, somewhat happier than the national average, family.

A black dude walked into the local welfare office to pick up his check.

He marched straight up to the counter and said,' Hi. You know, I just HATE drawing welfare. I'd really rather have a job.'

The social worker behind the counter said,'Your timing is excellent! We just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur and bodyguard for his beautiful daughter.

You'll have to drive around in his 2010 Mercedes CL, and he will supply all of your clothes. Because of the long hours meals will be provided. You'll also be expected to escort the daughter on her overseas holiday trips.

This is rather awkward to say but you will also have as part of your job assignment to satisfy her sexual urges as the daughter is in her mid-20's and has a rather strong sex drive.

A two-bedroom loft-type apartment with plasma TV, stereo, bar, etc., located above the garage will be designated for your sole use and
the salary is $200,000 a year.'

The guy, just plain wide-eyed, said,'You're bullshittin' me!'

The social worker said,'Yeah, well, You started it!'

Atlanta is ghetto. I live there and was born and raised. Downtown is definately the worst place to be. I was offerd pot in the underground when I was eleven. People are shot and killed down there every day. But, Atlanta also has some good things about it. They have some great colleges, World Of Coca Cola, Georgia Aquarium(Largest aquarium in the nation), and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial(Where he is buried). And if you've seen Real Housewives Of Atlanta, then that's an example of what upperclass ATL is like. Atlanta is not a stereotype. It has a lot of history and has ome culture that you could be proud of. Another example of what Atlanta is all about would be portrayed in Tyler Perry movies.

:) Atlanta is home to many great people. Don't diss it.

There is not much of a middle class population in Atlanta compared to places in the northeast, midwest, or western states. It is either high class/ rich people or low/class people on welfare.
