There are asst coaches for football, softball, baseball, etc. Every Saturday you see about 200 kids involved playing soccer - why can't we have a paid asst coach at the high school? The soccer program works fall and spring with about the same number of kids as softball, baseball, and basketball. The asst coach is a great role model, a really good Mom, and she hasn't been paid in two years!

Why Does the high school girls' assistant basketball coach not get paid??... She does all of their dirty work. She orders apparel. She buys supplies and runs the concession stand. She rides the school bus on away games (which the head coaches do NOT). Most importantly, she attends every practice. The reason she does not get paid is because Cope and Martin CLAIM to be each other's assistant coaches. By this, they mean that they each sit on the bench during both games. Personally, I feel coaching is done in practice, and neither of these two men assist the other squads in practice.(Meaning: Cope does not attend the boy's practice, yet he gets paid for it. Martin does not attend the girls' practice, yet he also gets paid for it.) High School assistant coaching supplements in DeKalb Co are $2,500. That's $5,000...

The only thing the assistant coach received was $500 from the basketball boosters club. When you consider a minimum of 2 hrs/day, 5 days/week, and almost 5 monnths (not including games and/or travel), that's $2.50 per hour. Then, add in the time she spends at "open" gym, pre-season conditioning, and those illegal practices,...

From what I understand about the West School baseball program, it was brought to West School as a trial and error, and the coaches (I know) the first year were only volunteers, now after the first year, I am not sure if he became paid after the first year.

I heard the head soccer coach gets paid a $5000 supplement for the boys and $5000 supplement for the girls team.Thats $10,000 bucks for 8 weeks of coaching. With that kind of pay day,let HIM PAY his assistant.I think the football coach pays an assistNT COACH.

I can answer some of the comments and questions you raised:
1. The assistant soccer coach is fully qualified - is fully certified by the state's athletic assoc. and attended all training and safety camps.
2. The head soccer coach may make $5000 per season, but he coaches TWO season, not one. He may make about what the football coach makes, but the head soccer coach currently teaches chemistry and physics, also. There's a big difference between preparing for a chemistry class or lab and teaching computers and some of the other subjects! The time needed for grading is a big difference, too. He will be adding an AP class this year, also, to what he currently does! He has one unpaid asst.
3. There are paid assistant coaches in basketball, baseball, football (multiple), and softball. Why not soccer?
4. The assistant soccer coach attends all practices, cleans the food stand, orders and buys food sometimes for the stand, sows the grass and helps mow the soccer field, and chaperones on those bus trips, too!
5. By the way - my mistake, it's been almost six years since the school has paid her. This coach has been promised a stipend from the Booster Club this year, but it is not the $2500 that you see the other assistant coaches getting.
6. This asst coach continues to coach because this person loves the sport - has helped develop this program for DeKalb County - and the kids love and respect this coach (in fact, BOTH coaches!!).
7. Last but not least, your current School Board voted again not to pay the assistant soccer coach at their May meeting.

Speak up to your Board members - if you are a supporter of local soccer, say something! This won't change unless people speak up!!!
