Everyone has been complaining on this board.
I'd like to know how many of you will be at the next meeting? ANY meeting.
Do you even know who your county commissioner or school board representative is???

Have you EVER talked to your CC or SB member about something that concers you or your children??

I was just wondering.

A good place to go to find out who your county officals are is DeKalbTennessee.com . The County Commission meets the 4th Monday every month, at 6:30 pm, in the new county building next to Ace Hardware.

Great, but the county commission always makes up there minds at the meeting before the meeting. And if you do attend, they look annoyed when you try to speak, then they blow smoke and do what they want to do.

That is why we have a $5 million Fosterwood complex and no money for a ballfield at middle and west schools.

Then go to a Monday meeting and ask to be recognized and air your grievances with a live feed on WJLE. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Get involved.

Ballfields at middle and west schools are the responsibility of the director and school board. See I at next school board meeting.

See I at next school board meeting?????

Actually it isn't a school board problem because the county commission spent all the extra money on landfills and Fosterwood. Guess the kids could play baseball inside the Fosterwood multi-purpose bigass room that has basketball goals but not enough room to put them down?

Typical. Worried about a ball field. I understand the mentality and understand why you won't attend a meeting.

I for one am proud of the investment our county has made in the renovated County Services Building. I would like to see the next big project be renovating and upgrading our schools.

The money for a ball field would have to come from the school board funds, not from the commission.I see a lot bigger problems than ball fields.
Why all the negative talk about the renovated county building?I see this as a plus for the county, especially our seniors and young people. The ones that keep complaining about the cost being 5 million,I would like for you to post the figures that this is the actual amount spent,I don't think you can.

The Seniors are still at city hall as of today. Why not the county complex??

Funny how the county commissioners always want to blame everybody else when it comes to spending money.

The truth of the matter is that the county commission is the only body that approve spending money. The DeKalb County commissioners control the purse strings and no other county agency – school board, county clerk, register of deeds, tax assessor, school board, circuit court clerk or road supervisor can spend a penny without Mike Foster and the county commission’s approval.

So, call your county commissioner - their numbers are listed here:

http://www.dekalbtennessee.com/county-commiss...

Call them - show up at the next county commission meeting - Monday, March 26, 2012.

The DeKalb County Commission meets the 4th Monday of each month - either in the courthouse basement or at Fosterville.

No agnecy spends a penny unless these people say it is okay.

That is not entirely correct. The school board has there own budget and spending. True, the county commission approves the overal school budget, but they cannot/do not have control over how the money is spent, ie, ball fields. Go to the school board meetings if you want that addressed.

I think they are still finishing out the inside of the complex to prepare for the move.

Tonight at the basement of the courthouse (March 22, 2012) at 5:30 or 6 pm is the all committees meeting. Come see how it works.

Nobody can produce the figures - the figures are a carefully guarded secret of Mike Foster and the budget committee. Just like UCDD - no one knows what its going on. We will find out soon enough. Bet out taxes get raised again.

You miss the point. The county commission has funded the school system at bottom dollar. The school board has few, if any discretionary dollars to spend for ball fields, band uniforms, and football, basketball, soccer or baseball programs. That is why all these groups have to hold fundraisers – like the football teams highly successful ham breakfast a few weeks ago.

No doubt the new county courthouse annex is a very nice, first class building, but what do you expect for $5 million?

I give Mike Foster credit, he has the courthouse in first class shape as well – after previous county executives neglected the courthouse and let it fall into a state of disrepair.

Kudos to Mr. Foster, he is a first class builder.

Now it’s time to spend some money on our schools. If we can have a world class landfill, a beautiful courthouse and a state-of-the-art county annex building, how about we spend some money on our children’s education and have school facilities that we can be just as proud of?

Barney Rubble, you miss the point. Administrative salaries are higher then Rutherford County. Teacher salaries are some of the lowest in the mid state. County commission does not set these salaries, the school board does. The school budget is approximately $21million. That is over half the county's budget. They also have a BEP savings account of almost $5million. Get the facts and get them straight. Mote waste comes from the school than anyother county department. Facts and numbers do not lie.

First of all, we were talking about the DeKalb County Commission and how much the DeKalb County Commission has allotted to the DeKalb County School system.

So you need to get your facts straight – Yabbadabbadoo, or PBF Buddy, or anyone else.

Next, you keep mixing it up and comparing apples with oranges, and bringing up new things.

What I said was this:
“You miss the point.

Now you are bringing in salaries paid to administrative personnel – which you claim are higher than those salaries paid in Rutherford County. You have me there because I do not have knowledge of those figures – do you?
Next you claim “(DeKalb County)Teacher salaries are some of the lowest in the mid state.(DeKalb) County commission does not set these salaries, the school board does.”

The State of Tennessee sets the MINIMUM salaries of school teachers. This is covered in section 49, Tennessee Code Annotated. The Statue states a minimum salary for school teachers and provides that the State of Tennessee will furnish each county in Tennessee a certain amount of dollars that must be used to pay teachers.

If any county decides to pay teachers more THAN the required amount, that is also permitted – BUT the county is responsible for the extra payment. Meaning that the DeKalb County Commission MUST appropriate the extra money to pay school teachers ABOVE the State of Tennessee required minimum.

So, if DeKalb County pays lower salaries, it is the DeKalb County Commission’s fault – AND the teachers, or their designated representatives – DeKalb Education Association - should petition the DeKalb County Commission for better salaries.

What doesn’t make sense is the TEACHER representation on the DeKalb County Commission:

Jack Barton – wife; Bradley Hendrix; Wayne Cantrell – retired teacher, wife, daughter; Marshall Ferrell; Larry Summers – wife (retired).

Why are these commissioners not screaming, yelling and demanding that DeKalb County not have better schools? Better teacher pay? Better teachers????

Barney, you miss again. Commission does not set teacher's salaries, the school board pays above what the state allots. The commission approves or disapproves the budget for the schools. The school board gets the money and allots the money however they wish. The commission does not tell them how to spend the money, just how much they can spend.
By the... The commissioners are elected by the people to represent the district they live in. They represent farmers, factory workers, laborers, as well as teachers. That's the reason commissioners do not set salaries or build ball fields. That's left up to the school board. So call Dub, Charlie, Kenny, Billy, John David, and Johnny to complain about ball fields and salaries.
And... Last year the left over money from the budget was $1.3million. That could have been used for ball fields, school supplies or teachers' salaries. Instead it was put into a savings account and for what use?
Research these things. That way you can get the facts and not just "I think" so it must be right.
