Anyone know where my 15 yo can take a class for gun safety? He has been interested in learning how to shoot but I want him to learn the safety part first.

I don't have any real answers but I would ask at the local sportsman's clubs. They may not have classes but probably have answers.

Talk to Mr. Boxley up at the gun shop by the old Dairy Queen.

Try the Belleville Shooting Range. It's in about the 200 block of North Illinois St. Almost positive they do.

Every kid should learn firearm safety as part of health class starting way before 15. People are reckless even if you aren't. Never know when a 10yr old playing at a friends may find one. 20 minutes in second grade could be the difference between a funeral and not letting them play there anymore. Kid should go then come home a teach their parents:)

Both of my sons took a firearm safety class at SWIC in Red Bud. If you give them a call I am sure they can help and they are also given at other locations to suit you. Hope this helps you more than the other smartmouthed posts here!

Both of my sons attended a firearms safety course at the Quail Club just outside of Belleville. I didn't see anything about it on their website ( www.quailclub.com ), but I'm sure you could e-mail or call them and get some information. Good luck!

It's people like you who say that won't happen in Waterloo. The kids here know better. Open your eyes people the kids these days get bullied so bad who knows what they will do.

I believe it could happen anywhere, any day. Like you say, kids are going to learn one way or another- they aren't stupid- but if kids are being taught correctly about them and all their dangers they will properly know and there won't be accidents. Yes they could go to the school and shoot people up but the accidents are the ones that can be prevented. In class they will inform you on how and why to lock up guns and using your safety and that can and will prevent kids from getting the guns or playing with them not knowing any better.

So I looked at Red Bud SWIC and there is a hunting certificate class for ages 7 and up. Is that the same thing?

Thanks for the helpful comments by he way.

Go up to the quail club. They will be having one soon. It's free also.

Belleville shooting range is the best I know of... However most shooting ranges do require a small gun safety course anyhow. They don't just hand you a gun and tell you to have at it. Especially for someone under 18. At 16 I got a ton of gun safety info from the guys in Belleville just from looking at guns and holding them to find the right size for me.
