I have been looking at houses on eBay that are located in Smith Center, Kansas. Does anyone want to talk about life there? How are the winters? The shopping? The quality of life?
Thanks to anyone who'd like to share>

Life in Smith Center can be boring....but it is a good boring. We have a relatively low crime rate. I've lived in Smith Center my whole life (45 years) and we haven't had a murder that I know of. Don't move here expecting to see a Wal-Mart or any eating franchise. We have local restaurants, a burger joint, etc. As far as entertainment, we have a theatre that gets very recent releases. We also have a bowling alley, a swimming pool, and a very nice park. Our hunting produces some of the best pheasant, turkiey, and deer hunting in the midwest. I'm highly prejudiced, but I think Smith Center is a great place to raise a family.

I forgot to mention that Smith Center is centrally located between several larger towns that do have shopping and entertainment. Most of these towns are from 70 to 120 miles from Smith Center.

I would look into it very carefully, I have lived there, and believe me if you weren't born and raised there and part of the bubba system you will always be treated like an outsider

I agree with Kathy from Wakefield 100%. I’ve lived in several small communities in Smith and Osborne counties, SC being one of them – so I speak from experience. SC has the typical "small-town values”: lots of hypocrisy and intolerance. Just ask those from the Transcendental Meditation group who’re trying to live, peacefully, in Smith Co. In spite of the vaunted values of compassion, tolerance and forgiveness from the many SC “Christians” the TM’ers have been met with quite the opposite. The hostility is open. Pick up a copy of the Smith Co. Pioneer and start reading through the small community, weekly columns (esp. the contributor whose last name begins with an “A”) or even some things from the paper’s editor. SC is a typical “small town America” stuck in a past where certain groups or individuals have no place. Their "values" extend only to those who look like them, think like them and "feel" like them. Plus, like Kathy said, if your last name isn’t one of the “power-names” in SC, then you’ll always be a nobody.

SMITH CENTER IS THE FINEST SMALL COMMUNINTY ON THE PLANET. EVERYBODY IN SMITH CENTER ARE HARD WORKING, HONEST PEOPLE. THERE IS NO USE OF ILLEGAL DRUGS OR DRINKING PROBLEMS IN SMITH CENTER. THE SMITH CENTER REDMEN ARE AN UNSTOPPABLE FORCE WHICH WILL NEVER BE STOPPED. SMITH CENTER PEOPLE HAVE NO BIAS AGAINST ANYONE AND THE POLICE AND SHERIFF DEPARTMENTS ARE FREE OF CORRUPTION. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO YOU ARE, YOU WILL BE ACCEPTED AND MAKE AN ENORMOUS FORTUNE IN SMITH CENTER. ALL OF SMITH COUNTY IS WORKING TOGETHER WITH THE TM GROUP TO MAKE THE UNIVERSITY A SUCCESS AND WELCOME THEM TO THE COMMUNITY.

Although what Kathy and Mr Salty say have some truth to it, in recent years things have improved somewhat. I have lived here 20 years and have seen a lot of changes. It does have a small town mentality, but that can work to your benefit also. It is very safe; I am not afraid for my children to walk to school and go out to play at the park. In the beginning, I was also treated as an outsider, but if you live here for any length of time, that goes away. Smith Center is what it is....rural Kansas.

As a life-long resident of Smith Center, I can say that it has awarded me a great life to live here. It's unfortunate that some such as Kathy (she lived in Lebanon) come here and try to paint an ugly picture of Smith Center. While it is possible that she might not have been well-received in Smith County (once again, she lived in Lebanon), I'm sure that many who have moved here would not share her sentiment. Smith Center is a great place to raise a family contrary to what some here may want to make you think.
