State Department spends $5 million on bar glasses

Washington politicians' egos, penchant for nepotism and disregard for taxpayers' money knows no bounds. For weeks leading up to the country's second government shutdown in nearly 20 years, all America talked about, and continues to, is the nation's spending - and the nearly $17 trillion debt problem.

Nevertheless, amid the country's financial woes, the State Department decided there was a pressing need for U.S. embassies to have $5 million of fine crystal from which to pour, toast and imbibe their liquids. With the blessing of Secretary of State John F. Kerry and heavy lobbying to Mr. Kerry from Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, Vermont Democrat, on Sept. 25, the State Department awarded Vermont-based Simon Pearce (note the Vermont connection) a five-year contract. For $5 million, Simon Pearce will manufacture the majority of the 20 different styles of "handcrafted" crystal glasses and barware in its Quechee, Vt., facility.

As chairman of the Senate Appropriations State, foreign operations and related agencies subcommittee, Mr. Leahy wrote Mr. Kerry a letter, strongly urging him to award the crystal contract to Simon Pearce. In a press release, Mr. Leahy oozed excitement: "It is wonderful to have such an exquisite example of Vermont craftsmanship on display and in use in our embassies around the world."

If only Mr. Leahy were equally as excited about cutting the government's debt, financed largely by China and Japan. Now more than two weeks into the shutdown, Mr. Leahy has been issuing press releases calling it the "Republican Shutdown," yet Democrats such as Mr. Leahy himself would rather continue spending money America doesn't have on items such as crystal, than talk seriously about cutting our debt and deficit. Stop talking out of both sides of your mouth, Mr. Leahy.

Simon Pearce acknowledged its first order from the State Department was for 12,500 crystal pieces. Hold onto your hats, taxpayers, because these individually crafted pieces of crystal range from a low of $58 for a wine glass to a high of $100 for a champagne flute. Boasting on its website, the company encourages customers to "choose what you love to reflect your style and way of living." Evidently, the State Department's style of living under the Obama administration is very extravagant.

When you consider President Obama hasn't let a day go by in five years when he hasn't demonized America's higher earners to "pay their fair share" in taxes, it raises the question: for what? To support government largesse and waste such as this? Why can't America's diplomats and visitors to embassies drink out of plain, old glass like most other Americans? This is just another example of how our elected officials and government bureaucrats think they are entitled to do as they please instead of what we elected or hired them to do: that is, to serve what's in the best interest of "we the people," not themselves.

In all fairness, the State Department's glassware purchase isn't the only example of government waste and dereliction of duty. At the end of each fiscal year, on Sept. 30, government agencies' budgets are held hostage to a "use it or lose it" policy. The agencies either spend all the taxpayer money they've been appropriated by Congress or have the unspent amount deducted from the next year's budget. Unfortunately, federal bureaucrats are revolted by the thought of spending less money, so they go on lavish shopping sprees at the end of each fiscal year.

Obama will be the downfall of this country if he doesn't curb his love of lavish spending at the taxpayers expense. Why is there so much waste and lavish spending? Why can't the government be frugal list Americans are having to be? Spend less and do more with less? I just cannot wait for his excellency to leave office. The sooner the better.

I heard that loud and clear. What a happy day it will be when he vacates the presidency.

We need to get these slacker liberals out of office and elect some traditional Americans to office. That's republicans and libertarians.

Yet another case of no one is responsible, no one is fired, no one is the owner. Anyone can do anything they want without repercussion in the Obama administration. There is no end in sight as long as he is in office. And now he has ACORN cronies collecting the most important information you can give them...in the name of Obamacare. I wouldn't turn over my street name to them.

Since Acorn is dead in the water who might be these so called Acorn cronies? This tale is never ending. It's certainly no worse than it was under Bush who was, in my opinion, king of cronyism but let's get real, it's been like this since the beginning. Where else do Presidents go to get people to work for them other than to their list of friends? Some just have smarter friends than others.

This really points out a major flaw in how we select our leaders. There ought to be some kind of merit testing before an individual can even run for public office, you know, like hiring a city manager. I mean seriously, what president in recent history would you hire to run Asheville? We maybe could create a board of directors composed of intelligent people from all walks of life who could sit in quorum and select those who were actually qualified by virtue of a set of values they could all agree upon.

Just look at the pack of dimwits the Republican Party had contending for the nomination. Romney, was the best of the lot? Maybe but that's not saying a whole helluva lot. Partisan politics is going to destroy this nation, sooner than later. Those who profess a strict ideology should be disqualified. You sure as hell could not run a major corporation with closed minded idiots. Look at GM back in the fifties. When GM went really big the drivers were the engineers who cared about quality and performance. Then the stylists got control and it was all down hill after that. Remember, they changed the look of Chevy ever year.

Hey the same goes for the Democrats but at least the Dems have managed to keep the REAL lefties at bay, so to speak. No matter what you think I believe Obama is at least a moderate, in spite of radical right wing claims. Just have a peek at the real socialists and lefties say. They are not happy with the guy either but they will NEVER be happy with any nominee just as the Tea Party will NEVER be happy unless one of theirs gets it.

The bulk of Americans are either totally in the dark regarding politics or very much centrist for one very simple reason, nobody is comfortable with change and that's all the radicals on both sides are constantly screaming for. Change can be good but NOT when it is ideologically driven. Revolutions ultimately are bound to fail for the simple reason that revolutionaries once in power become lovers of the status quo.

Jefferson advocated a major revision of the Constitution every 19 years because he understood a static system was bound to grow old and out of touch. http://press-pubs.uchicago.edu/founders/docum...

PS, NO the rewrite cannot be entrusted to the elected officials who will fight tooth and claw to protect their own interests. There are a number of things that need to be done with our present system that can only be done by a group of intelligent people with no particular political ax to grind. Gerrymandering, for example. California has gone a long way toward fixing this. Redistricting needs to be done periodically but it never should be entrusted to politicians who will, quite naturally, seek to gain more and more power using this device.

The trouble with politicians is the very desire to gain power and rule over others is a sickness of the soul. My vision tells me that all the wars ever fought on this planet were fought by the underclasses and fomented by two major entities, the priests and the politicians who have been in league with each other since the beginning of state religions, perhaps even before. It's all about controlling the masses. Not that the masses don't need controlling, they do, but not by ideologically driven fools who, quite naturally, seek to DICTATE!

Speaking of Chevy changing the styles every year, I loved those days. Them WAS the days. The '57 Chevy was the most beautiful thing I ever saw, and then there were the '57 and '58 Cadillacs, the '58 Thunderbird. Does anyone remember the '57 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz? It looked like it was from outer space.
56 and 57 T-Birds? It was then that the French began calling the American car "La Belle Americaine."

And btw, remember the old Porsche 356? Here is one that has almost a million miles on it. Notice that every surface on this exotic beauty is a compound curve, no straight lines anywhere:

Yes, it's unsavory that Obama and Vermont Sen. Leahy are practicing the sleaze of the spoils system.

I remember Speaker Denny Hastert using the power of the purse to enrich himself by legislation that caused the value of his real estate holdings to skyrocket.

The all do it, so sue them. Put them in the guillotine! Let them eat cake!

All the presidents have indulged their vices and follies. Ronald and Nancy Reagan threw lavish balls at the White House, and the press blasted them for it. I remember for just one ball millions were spent, and Nancy was a biiiig spender. Thank goodness Michelle Obama is not another Madame Pompadour like Nancy Reagan.

So you seem to think it's ok for national politicians to line their pockets, indulge their vices and scarf off the taxpayers but not the local DA? He's a rackateer but they are all a-ok? Interesting view on ethics.

Here's who they are. It's all over the news. You haven't heard it?

Ex-ACORN Operatives Receiving Tax Dollars to Promote Obamacare

Although ACORN disbanded in 2010 under a cloud of illegal activities and police investigations, it seems to have come back under a new name. The United Labor Unions Council Local 100, which is a non-profit organization based out of New Orleans, was set up by ACORN founder Wade Rathke after he left the group in 2009. Despite the fact that his earlier organization was banned from receiving taxpayer money, his new organization has signed on to be part of the multi-state navigator drive to help people enroll in Obamacare.

The program has handed out $67 million in grants to push the healthcare rollout, including almost half a million dollars to an organization called Southern United Neighborhoods, a charity set up by Local 100 and run by many former members of ACORN.

Illiterate strawman argument alert by the Minnetonka momo!

Nobody says it's OK. It happens and it ought to be illegal. Every once in a while a corrupt congressman is grabbed up and ruined, like Duke Cunningham or Mark Foley.

But Moe Ron Moore is a Brady Rule violator, an extortionist, a suborner of perjury, a mafioso-type who operates protection rackets and commits manifest abuse of discretion, tampers with evidence, and participates in shadow government and a secret society of rogues, scoundrels, and hooligans. Moore is a racketeer.

Did anyone think for one minute Moe-Ron Moore didn't corruptly benefit by both of the evidence room scandals, by the Curtis Canty/ABC Board scandal, by the Bobby Medford scandal? His DNA is all over those crime scenes. His DNA is all over the malicious false imprisonment of several innocent people who lives were ruined. He is a cog in a corrupt political machine that will catastrophically fail.
His day is coming. Litigation is cooking right now that will blow that fleabitten rug off his big head.
