Titanic Humboldt squid expand numbers, range - News

Full story: Honolulu Star-Bulletin

Last week an "Ocean Watch" reader recognized me at the bank. We chatted for a minute, and then he said, "Have you written about squid?" Funny he should ask.

I'm interested in any techniques they use to hunt cooperatively. Do they go after faster prey like small fish? I can't imagine needing a pack of 1200 to catch krill.

Sooner or later a movie on this will evolve and it won't be a science fiction novel. It will be the real thing and each chapter will be accounts of the Giant Diablos. ooooohhhhhh chicken skin.

Perhaps Susan could enlighten us on El Nino and how that fits into the world of the Humboldt squid. El Nino seems to have been pretty much lost as a climate phenomenon since global warming has seized the media zeitgeist.

Humbolt Squid are commonly known as Giant Squid. There also is a species bigger than them!

Why aren't fishermen catching the squid commercially and exporting it worldwide? It seems like it wouldn't take many to fill a small boat with these large squid. The more squid you catch, the more fish we have in the Pacific Ocean.

Squid tempura is great to serve to kids ... and make great pupu.

This opportunity is being wasted by the fishermen. If they can't catch Salmon, they should go after Humboldt squid.

I don't think these squid are any good for eating unless you are an ammonia connoisseur (I think that's what these are supposed to taste/smell like). If it were any good, don't you think there'd be someone raping that resource by now?

In packs they do in fact hunt small animals such as krill and anchovies. However, they are fully capable of taking down larger prey, such as other squid of the same species.
