The city government looks out for their own. First, I cannot understand why they cannot waive the application fees. Secondly, with all of these non-for-profits organizations and churches why haven't stepped up to assist this family.

Evidently, their landlord isn't part of the elite in Bardstown. I've witnessed a landlord call in favors to the planning and zoning permission. They also are helpful to the owners of the beautiful historical homes in the downtown area.

Why challenge the parents of a disabled child? When they are known for issuing favors. When people do the elderly and disabled wrong, people will begin to expose the good ,the bad and the ugly.

This is the beast system. No common sense, no discretion, no compassion, just run everyone through the system like clock Work, follow procedure without question. Kinda like two kids get into a fight, well instead of going their separate ways and done is done, the cops get involved and make it worse. Same with any aspect of "the system " greed and cruelty just because you can. This is you're atheist society future.

Its all about the city getting free money in the form of permits. Quite sickening, I could understand if they were building a carport, an addition, or an elevator inside for the little girl, but a handicap ramp. They should be ashamed!

Very typical of Beautiful Bardstown. It's all about getting all the free money they can from permits, inspections, and fees. Most of which are completely over the top and unnecessary. As if the property tax rates aren't insane enough, the powers that be have to keep waxing the citizens anyway they can.

The news story really made our town look bad. In the end, the landlord is at fault. He was supposed to file the paperwork 4 months ago. People have tried to call in to donate but with the lazy landlord nobody can. Its not an issue of money. Its an issue of following the law. Anyone who lives within city limits knows how strict they are. If you dont like it, dont live there!

I think the permit required by the City of Bardstown is ridiculous! I had to get one to put an outbuilding on my lot in the back yard. My next door neighbor did NOT get one because his builder told him not to do it ... waste of money and no one ever noticed.

It is a freakin' wheel chair ramp, C'MON MAN!!!!!!!!!!

A nice couple for New Albany came over and gave the family the money for the waiver. I believe the City Council approved it tonight. WHAS was there covering it.

"Town" ain't going to help anybody from that side of the tracks, remember the fire money donation debacle. LOL!!!!! This "town's" administrations primary purpose is to extricate dollars from "we's" pocket, via taxes, raising utility rates, craft shows, bourbon festivals, and quilt shows.....if you want to help individually then look up the little girls address, and deal with it on an individual basis.

the homeowner, David Newton, defied the law and failed to obtain the necessary permit for the ramp.
that is fact, cut and dried.
the issue on Hwy 49 with the garage, Twyla Hart, she failed to properly measure the set-back from the right of way.
like it or not, rules are established to protect all, not just a select few.
some of you have posted situations where you or someone you know also defied the regulations.
if that makes you feel good, so be it.
but it's because of people like you that makes the establishment look to be such bad guys.
Hart moved the garage to be within the proper set-back; it appears the issue with the ramp will be resolved in favor of the family.
this could have all been prevented had the homeowners, in both instances, taken the proper steps and asked the appropriate questions.
I have had dealings with zoning in the past, without any issues.
because I took the time to be a responsible home owner and educated myself to what can or cannot be.
like it or lump it, that's the way it is here.
that's my story and I'm sticking to it
That's all well and fine but the real issue is, the government telling American citizens what they can and can't do. Pay this, do that, jump through this hoop and we will ALLOW YOU, to do what you want to do on your own property. BULLSHIT!

The HWY 49 issue was a public safety issue, along with all set back rules, those I can understand. But a wheel chair ramp... COME ON! The stink about the ramp is simple. NO ONE sent any money up town for them to waist. Yes, I said waist. Example... The Nelson county building code inspector is only qualified to do building code inspections, the Nelson county Electrical Inspector has the qualifications to do Electrical inspections and building code inspections. More importantly he has the time to do both. Why the extra salary? WAIST!!!

And that is why they approved it! Shine a little light on the rat's nest and watch how quickly their behavior changes. It will be back to business as usual as soon as they pack up the cameras and go back to Louisville.

Our town officials make you feel ashamed to be from Bardstown. The media puts the heat on and makes them look bad so they are not going to tear the ramp down now. However, they are going to try and roast the landlord who did build the ramp for the family without the permit. Of course if you have ever dealt with getting permits, etc. from the "city" then you know that can be. How shameful that the landlord showed a touch of humanity and built a ramp for a child with a disability. It's just terrible that landlord did that and let the city miss out on a fee. But since the city couldn't collect another unnecessary fee they had to stir it up. Way to go rocket scientists, your greed and pettiness put the media spotlight on you and made the town look like a great big joke! One more reason Bardstown is "The Most Beautiful Small Town in America!"

how do you figure Sheckles is involved in this ?
the controversy was between the homeowner, David Newton, and Planning & Zoning Commission, of which the City of Bardstown has no direct control over.
not defending, just asking ?
if you are taking your comment from the WHAS 11 story:
[A wheelchair ramp used by a 6-year-old child is at the center of a dispute between the girl's family and the city of Bardstown.]
they should be corrected and made to publish a correction to the story.
the "City", nor the "Mayor" (whom I guess you meant to infer by {Sheckles}) wasn't involved in this, directly.
You didnt read the article about the people calling him out on his lies at the meeting did you?
