i feel the pain here in california, all that is stated in this article is true, but what you havent heard is that all shipment of Alfalfa is going to saudi arabia and Japan.
they come out and buy the fields before they are even cut.
ive been keeping up with the market and makes me wonder why this has to happen . yet we fail to take care of our own

When I lived in the Socorro (NM) area many years ago, many folks growing onions and chili stopped all that and put in alfalfa. The last item paid far better than the first two, simply because of the demands made by area cattle feed lots and horse owners.

It's called basic "market supply and demand." I imagine more people will put in more alfalfa in the future - if they can get the irrigation water for it...:-/

I remember in the mid 60's, my family farmed many crops including alfalfa.

My father would recall a story where he sold his alfalfa hay for $12.00 a ton (we had a 34 ton pick-up truck), delivered from Highway 28 at Mesilla to east of LC Country Club area.

Delivered. He even took checks.

The times, Oh, they have changed.
Some things never change (overloading a truck)

Gee...a crop in short supply is expensive? How is this a surprise to a farmer or rancher? That's how they buy a new pickup trucks, isn't it?
I don't care whether the alfalfa is going to Saudi Arabia, Japan, or Mars...those that want the product pay what it costs to get it, period. The free market at work.
Should "we" be supplying cheap feed to horse owners, as if it's a constitutional right? I think not.
Who knows, maybe horsemeat will show up at Albertsons or on restaurant menus.....

It's not the cost of feed for those who have horses that is the concern. It is the cost of food at the grocery store that is the concern.

The higher feed stock prices combined with higher energy costs will drive up prices at the grocery store.

Let's hope global warming doesn't give us another very cold winter.

Ya'll are funny the honest truth is that 5% of the total hay crop is exported to other countries the rest is consumed domestically. We definitely don't want to sell the alfalfa for what it costs to get it. Would you want to sell your cattle for what it costs to grow them? Everyone is trying to play the game. If you can't afford feed then learn how to play the game a little better.

Im sure the price is going up because of the water prices for farmers. Not because of the exporting. Aren't farmers paying like 2 and 3 times more for water than in recent years?
