Yes those of you who get to take your family there for $15-$30 a month is because of them! Look around when uou go there names are posted around like the montgomerys in the pool area!! And those having students in college going to semo / sahec bet you didn't know the bedells have donated over a million dollars to the college. So instead of bashing them maybe you should thank them! There's way more richer people out there aka those on TV but you don't bash them you pay them more just to get a signature or hear them sing. So grow up because they keep this town from going down hill.

if they are keeping this town from going down hill, they are missing the mark. Yes, they ALL donate to this and that, some do it out of the goodness of their hearts, some for tax write off. The ones that get and have always gotten my thanks are the ones who work silently in the back ground, expecting no name planks or wanting no one to know where the money came from. This did not all start because a store is being built. This thread started because someone with money lacked the common sense and dignity to NOT put giant banners in front of their home. While it is the right of the person to do such. Did they really think about the controversy it would and has caused? Apparently not. Dollar General and others will continue to build and will continue to help Sikeston's tax base, to me, this is a good thing. While I'm sure none of us would be pleased to have a business next to us (no matter the cost of our home), if we bought land in a commercial zone (which was apparent) then perhaps the thing to do would be to accept it and move forward with our lives? It seems to me to be a childish thing to do to put signs up after the fact. Perhaps in the spirit of the season Mr. Bedell should take down his signs, accept reality and help Sikeston to move onward and upward. Oh, but silly me, this is Sikeston and people here are just determined to show the world the pettiness and stupidity in this area. I can safely say if I were a major major company thinking of locating north on 61, I'd start looking at other towns, perhaps one not quiet so petty.

Now Reread what you posted. If you have respect for those working and donating in the background how do you know the bedells don't or Montgomery's. I know several things they donate to that they don't want recognition but some places do if out of their kindness. I think they deserve the recognition. Whether they are giving pocket change away or not they are helping.

He wouldn't sell it to him!! Can't you read? That is the point of this topic! This was done for the sole purpose of hurting his enemy! Why the anamosity I don't know. I'm sure it runs deep. Maybe jb is pissed his inlaws sold him the nice property to begin with? He may have had plans to build there in the future??

And you know this how? I haven't seen anywhere where Brad said jb wouldn't sell him the land, this is just people on topix talking.
I also heard a rumor, and it's just a rumor, jb called Brad about buying the land and Brad didn't return the call. Only those two know the facts and it's their business.

Sikeston council is stupid. Do you know how many people Dollar General employs in a store? A hand full. Do you know how many the Bedell companies employ? Too many to try to count. Why not go to bat for folks that are locals. Most of that money that goes in Dollar General goes out of town. Just like Wally World. Why piss off a big employer? Good jobs, bad jobs, call them what you want. They are jobs and every town in the land is fighting for them. People that are spending money at Dollar General are spending it there anyway. It won't add a penny to nothing. If I was the home owners I would sell everything in this town and move my operation to Cape. Same for Montgomery. Yeah they are rich but by golly I appreciate my job and they were smart enough to do what they do. They are all well off enough to donate those houses and turn them in to homeless shelters. What I would do. Let folks shuffle back and forth from one end to the next. Stick it Sikeston!!! I won't bite the hand that feeds me. Sikeston City leadership has sucked for a long time. Get off your asses and do something besides whine. There should have been a series of meetings and community involvement before this happened.

Would you please tell me how you think the City Council could stop the building of a new Dollar General store if the area was zoned commercial and the proposal meet all the building codes. They can't so your the one who is stupid

If the land is zoned commercial and the landowner chooses to sell how can you stop it? Last time I checked this is still America. Montgomery tried to stop the health clinic, what makes you think the Bedell's could stop this? Granted I wouldn't want a dg next to me but that's the chance you take when you build in a commercial zone, this is a no brainer.

Just because it is zoned commercial doesn't mean there can't be changes or adjustments made. It is done all the time. I sat on the p and z comm. way back and we did just that. We didn't let anything happen that didn't need to happen. A guy wanted to put a bar on Virginia St. way back and it was zoned commercial and we stopped him. So you are stupid. Planning and Zoning should be looking out for it's citizens and not some out of town company. I saw them roll out the red carpet many times for some out of state guys and wouldn't bend a bit to help a local. Usually the out of towners ended up sticking it to us. Remember the Brass Mill out by the power plant. So there stupid. Are you on the council? Sikeston has no leadership downtown. Hasn't had for a long time just like the rest of the country. Out of town companies have drained dollars away for years.

The house is very pretty and I have always admired the fence he chose to put arount it, very tastefully done. It's a no brainer that alot of money was put into this property. Here's the question, if you build your possible dream home in a commerical zone and by land that is partly owned by someone that you must have bad blood with wouldn't you think in the future if you didn't become "friends" that he would try to "get your goat"? Only my opinion but if I had that kind of money to build that kind of house I would be sure I built it where something like this would of never happened. I'm sorry for both partys involved, home owner and Dollar General.

Your talking about a bar near a residential
but I still would have file a lawsuit and you would have lost.

Putting a bar next to a residential neighborhood isn't even close to the same thing here. I still say if Mr. Montgomery couldn't stop the Health Clinic from going in Brad doesn't have a chance of stopping this. I call b.s. on you being on the p&Z comm, you sound like the one that's stupid. DG doesn't seem worried, they've got the metal framing up already. Brad and JB must have had issues or it wouldn't have come to this.

quote: "Out of town companies have drained dollars away for years", what if Unilever, the ice cream plant and Orgill picked up and moved? Do you realize how many people these two companies employ, paying very good wages for this area? I'm thankful for these "out of town" companies!
