I can't believe sikeston schools isn't releasing kids yet. The school has already had them long enough to count it as a full day, so why make the kids stay longer and put them at risk? The news just said roads are slick in cape, which has less snow than sikeston. So one would think the roads are slick in sikeston as well. Im so tired of the school not putting our kids first

Unfortunately Sikeston hasn't changed in MANY years. I was in school in the 70s and early 80s there and every school around us would close but not Sikeston. They would open only to send us home early so we were sure to be out on the roads when they were much much worse. CRAZY!

This really doesn't make any sense. As long as sikeston gets their 4 hours in they will get paid. And this is ridiculously sad. They could care less about are children.

Yeah they are idiots.! Poplar Bluff let their children out today as they care about their kids and themselves! The Sikeston School officials are all out for the MONEY!!!GREEDY BASTARDS, THEY WOULD RATHER OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDKIDS GET POSSIBLY KILLED ON THE ROADS FROM PEOPLE HAVING ACCIDENTS AND HITTING SOMEONE OR SOMETHING.... THIS SHOULD BE AGAINST THE LAW FOR THEM TO ALLOW THEM TO GO TO SCHOOL WHEN IT IS SNOWING AND WE ALREADY HAVE A FOOT OR SO OF SNOW, AND ALSO THEY SEND THE KIDS OUT IN 32 DEGREE WEATHER TO PLAY?????? WHY DO THEY THINK SO MANY KIDS ARE SICK SO MANY TIMES.......DUMBASSES. DON'T GIVE A SHIT!

Be the PARENT! Don't give the school that responsibility. If you don't want your child to go to school because of the weather keep them home. Think for yourself (and your child). Don't expect the school to make the decision about YOUR child.

DUH BITCH THE SCHOOL GETS YOU IF YOU DON'T SEND YOUR KID TO SCHOOL FOR THREE DAYS WITHOUT A DAMN GOOD EXCUSE LIKE A DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT AND NOTE. THEY CALL DFS AND EVERYONE ON YOU STUPID SO WHAT GIVES IT IS THE DAMN' SCHOOL. SO BLAH BLAH BLAH. THEY SHOULD BE MORE CARING AND RESPONSIBLE. I AM JUST STATING FACTS. LET OUR GRANKIDS GET HURT DUE TO STUPIDITY AND OUR LAWYER WILL NAIL THEM..... AND DON'T THINK WE DON'T HAVE MONEY TO PAY AN ATTORNEY WE ALREADY HAVE A RETIAINER FEE AT HIS OFFICE.

Then get ur screaming complaining off topix and drive your child to school. There is always a choice. Don't let your kid or grandchild skip three days then you wouldn't have to worry about them missing one day because of snow or spend that retainer to take them to the doctor

Well who ever this person is, that says our kids need all the schooling they can get,you must think you are better than we are, gotta a news flash, Huh NOT.
But this school board needs to start thinking about the lives and safety of our children not the almighty dollar, that goes behind each hour that they are not dismissed or closed when we get hit with bad weather. As parents and grandparents yes their education is important, but what good is it going to do them if they get hurt or worse yet, lose them all together. And once one single precious life is lost because of their decisions, they will wish they had decided differently.

I totally agree. I see they have not cancelled classes for tomorrow either, although every other school in the area has. It makes me sick how callous the district can be. Maybe KFVS12 needs to be brought in on this again.

I didn't know which one to reply to...I work for a school district, we let out, but we have a lot of rural students and the country roads do not get attention in bad weather. You MOST certainly can get your child on a day with bad weather! Students get into attendance issues when they miss several days, without a doctor's note. I am appauld at the comments above. Again, parents want to blame the school, the school board, superintendent, principals, teachers, school cooks...on and on. If you are concerned about your child's safety, step up and take responsibility, get your child. And, to the individual who has a lawyer and will get $40,000.00...I pity your ignorance.

Parents of Sikeston students should flood the school board with calls of complaints. Waiting the way they did today to close school is unacceptable. The fact that they released them at 1:50 was ridiculous. The roads were extremely dangerous. Why is it not called for tomorrow??? There will be no overnight heatwave and all will melt away...single digits for the heartland tonight and what is on the roads will be solid ice in the morning!!!!

First, there's no need for calling people ignorant for expressing their concerns and beliefs. This IS a PUBLIC school district and the concerns of parents should be heard.
Sure, you don't have to send your child on snow days, and I'm sure they would make allowances for snow related absences. However, some parents can't take off work to go get their child when they've canceled school finally at 2:00. People have schedules. When those schedules aren't kept then that leaves the parent in a mess as well. It would be far easier to plan a day if you knew whether your child would be out of school or not, to know whether daycare is needed or you can take the time off. Etc.
Also, you're forgetting that many of the districts teachers don't live in Sikeston city limits. Those who have to travel longer distances in this mess. I'm sure the school wouldn't dismiss if a teacher died on his or her way to work either though.

They don't let them out because of this. "Reck" is properly spelled wreck. Example number one of why Sikeston kids are in school.

Well I just talked to a Deputy Sheriff and he said all the roads are very slick especially the back roads and side streets in and around Sikeston. He said there's a lot of black ice on the roads too. He said he didn't think Sikeston would close bacause they never have and he said he wouldn't be sending his kids to school. Way to go Sikeston
