I wish the absolute best for all of you. I hope and pray that you will find a job as soon as possible and be able to support your families. This is the kind of news that breaks my heart and it is way too common in America these days. I guarantee that the majority of the people at Brown Shoe work harder then a good majority of the working population. Good luck in your job search.

I am sorry to hear that Brown Shoe is closing. They have been in Sikeston for a long time. From my understanding it was a pretty good job and jobs are hard to come by in this area. I pray that all the employees are able to find other jobs.

I cannot believe that a company could take jobs out of Missouri and move them to California to make money. How can you possibly deal with all of the regulations and crazy laws in wackoland and make money? That is just idiotic.

Good luck to everyone looking for a job. I was there myself last year and if I could give any advice, I would say, look at every job for what it can be, not what it is now.

WOW. Okay, so my husband works at Brown Shoe. Firstly, you don't even start out at minimum wage! You start a few dollars ABOVE that. So that point is wrong. My husband has a DEGREE and several certifications AND was in the MILITARY,(yeah, he's one of those 'bums' who risked his life to save yours and give you the freedom to post the trash you post on the internet because you're most likely to weak to say anything in public/face-to-face!) Brown Shoe was simply the first and best job he could find in this podunk town! It's the price we paid for moving back closer to family. Also, these jobs are being outsourced to California, and the majority of those workers are immigrants. The company needs to dish out cheaper pay, story of America these days. Also, the shoes they distributed for shipping in that center weren't for crappy stores like WalMart, you've probably never even heard of the brands they carry because they're obviously too high-end for the likes of you! My grandpa got his first job back in the states when he came back from WAR at Brown Shoe, and they were so great to him. It sucks that 150+ people who WORK and make an HONEST LIVING will no be out on their butts starting in May. Good thing we've been looking for something better, but it looks like we're going to have to up and move closer to a city just to live because none of his qualifications are worth a hoot in a small place like this. And icu_, since you obviously have an issue with warehouse workers, what's your form of work? Welfare or fast-food industry? That's the only other options. God bless the families affected by this, I hope ya'll can find something else, especially those of you who don't get severance packages! And we all know those relocation jobs are only for 'higher ups', and when are those 'job finding booths' going to be set up?'Cause we've not even heard talk about them. Pfft.

Exactly. You start out above minimum and thats for work that isn't even worth minimum wages. Secondly the immigrants work harder than the lazy Americans making it even more profitable to relocate and since the shoes are imported it makes sense to locate closer to the Pacific coast.
Brown used to make shoes in this country untill the wage demands along with lazy work ethic forced them to go to foreign countries.
Oh and I forgot, WalMart is to upscale for Brown but it wil be ok for you soon because they take food stamps and cash unemployment checks

You are wrong once again. My wife can't get a job at a strip club, but my husband wont have to go to stripping, he has a $120,000 a year job. I won't be in line with you at Walmart next month to cash my govt check! THANK YOU! I will be just fine without my job, full time pays $12.00 an hour at Brown, Manpower pays $9.00 you work 40 hrs a week most if the time you work 45-60 hours a week. I would like to see your lazy ass go in there and hold up for just one week. I can pull 1700 pairs of shows a day by myself! Oh yeah it's easy! Come on when they start hiring more Manpower, maybe I will train your lazy ass!

I get so sick of people around here claiming $9 an hour is a good wage. Sure, it is good compared to $7.25, but it isn't going to allow anyone any level of stability. Employers will pay such lousy wages under the guise of this area having a much lower cost of living than a place like St. Louis. This is so blatantly false. I have lived in one of the most expensive cities in the country with friends who live in THE most expensive city in the country. I have lived in St. Louis and know what I paid for groceries and gasoline. I know what my friends are paying in rent and how much they are being paid. The only thing that seems to be significantly lower in cost is real estate...as in real estate one would purchase.

This assumption that it is so cheap to live in this area is wrong. But people keep repeating this lie until everyone believes it is true. Since few people will live elsewhere and move back, no one has a frame of reference of how much they are being screwed. It is completely within the realm of possibility that someone would offer $8-9/hr for a job that would pay $35,000-$40,000/yr in St. Louis. The job that paid me $31,000/yr here would pay me $70,000 in Chicago. Chicago is an expensive city, but it is NOT $40,000 more expensive, even taking into consideration a higher tax rate.

The going rate for rent in EP is $550/month. Daycare is $85/week for one kid. Gas is $3.55/gallon. And people might drive back and forth to Sikeston everyday for $8-9/hr. Not to mention car payments, insurance, student loans (because it is perfectly reasonable for a college grad to be offered $9/hr), groceries. It is no surprise that young people can't get their foothold in life. Sure, you could argue that we should wait until we have better jobs that pay more, but pray-tell, when will that ever happen? Getting a fifteen cent raise every year is hardly inspiring. My cousin and I laugh over how we just have to wait around for our parent's generation to die so we can actually get some sort of professional, decently paid position. I have lucked out in the job department, but a lot of my friends haven't. Turnover in decent jobs around here is so low I am willing to bet we are going to see a lot of people from my age group who have been college-educated receptionists for 30 years finally getting to ascend to the ranks of an administrative assistant at 55 when the old one finally croaks (because she sure won't retire anytime soon)!

No wonder so many people around here are on drugs!
