I was wanting to attend the LPN program here in Sikeston but after talking with someone I don't know if I want to go there anymore. I heard the teachers are mean and only a couple are competent. I also heard that they don't keep their students in order and it is often a three ring circus there. Does anyone know more about this or about any other local nursing schools.

One of the teachers taught my CNA class and she was an ok teacher but her personality is terrible, she thought she was better than everyone and favored certain students. As for other schools I think the Cape Girardeau Vocational school and Three Rivers has an LPN program.

I've heard that about that school. I've also heard they will kick you out if you look at them the wrong way. I don't know any of the teachers but I know a couple people who have attended in the past and they said it was a very hard program.

I am a nurse at the hospital here in town. I have heard stories about SOME of the students in that program from the years past. I often wonder if some of the students aren't mature enough to be a nurse or if the instructors just don't have a good hold on their students. This is not all of the students from that program though just a select few becasue I have seen and worked with some damn good nurses who went to school there.

As for it being hard any nursing school you go to is goig to be hard. Nursing school takes hard work and dedication no matter where you attend. The slackers usually don't make it through but think about it, would you want a slacker nurse taking care of you if you were in the hospital or would you want someone responsible.

Amen, Born to Care. I actually went to school at the Sikeston Program many years ago, you get what you put into it. I feel that anyone who really wants to have a good career, Sikeston LPN school is a fine place to start. But, if you just want to use up the government's money to go to school, maybe you should try something else. Nursing is a very demanding career hospitals are open 24/7 and it takes determination and dedication to be a GOOD Nurse.

I graduated from this program a couple of years ago and I know someone who is in the program now. I have mixed feelings about this topic. It does take hard work to make it through and they don't kick you out for just looking at them, it takes a couple of mistakes before you get kicked out. They let you know when you are getting close to getting the boot with a warning so it is really in the students hands on whether or not they stay, the instructors just follow the rules.

The faculty has changed a bit since I was there but I was a hard worker and did what I was told and didn't have any problems. There were some students who just couldn't do that though, some got kicked out and some just made the classroom setting a complete mess. I feel like I learned how to be a great nurse and was instructed very well in that area but sometimes I thought the instructors needed to do more to control the ones in the class who were acting out because they made it a very hard place to learn.

I do agree with Mmmmm Hmmmm though about the teacher who used to teach CNA classes, I didn't know she was teaching on the LPN level now. I know she did play favorites and was very stuck on herself though.

It is a hard program because they cover so much material in such a short amount of time. The administrator tells you at the informational meeting what is expected of you grade and behavior wise. I do think a few people get in that are a little immature and maybe a two year program would serve them better because it would give them a little time to grow up. As for a three ring circus, if it were nobody would be learning anything. I know sitting in a classroom for eight hours a day would be unbearable if you could not cut up or discuss anything the whole time. For people who like this type of atmosphere where you are treated like four year olds and not allowed to talk, breath or laugh out of turn there is an electronic billing place in town that would be perfect for you so maybe you should try working there! And the bottom line is finishing the program does not make you a nurse, the graduates still have to pass MO boards and there is no way they would pass if they were not learning anything now would they!

I know for a fact this week at the school one of the students caught a trash can in the building on fire at the school. I also know the school is on top of the dialysis building. I heard the fire was contained and the alarms did not go off but if they would have it would have been a disaster for the patients receiving dialysis in the same building. That sort of sounds like a three ring circus to me. I know I wouldn't want someone who doesn't have enough common sense not to put something hot in a trash can to be my nurse!

I wouldn't either and that is exactly what I meant when I said some people get in who are a little too immature to be there. I mean honestly anyone who is a smoker and has smoked for several years would just throw it in the toilet. I don't know one single person over the age of 18 who smokes that would throw a cigarette in a trash can! I mean that is not something you do out of habit honestly! Well you didn't say it was a cigarette but I am sure that is what everyone assumes it was, hmmm maybe it was a nonsmoker trying to get the smokers in trouble or it could have been one of the highschool kids who go to that same building for cna classes. Honestly smoking in a bathroom is like something you do when you are in jr high or highschool and anyone who has ever had a job where you had to take designated smoke breaks can wait five minutes to go smoke!

I had no idea how the fire started or that it was thought that someone was smoking in the bathroom. I would think that someone could smell the smoke from a cigarette before the fire started.

What! A fire was started above dialysis that could have been a monsterous disaster! Does anyone know if there was an investigation as to who started the fire? I hope there was becasue that person has no business being a nurse or a cna especially with dialysis under them! Perhaps the instructors don't have a good grip on their students and I mean the LPN instructors and the CNA instructors. Since maturity is a factor and it seems to be, perhaps the school needs to raise the age for getting in. I just can't believe a fire was started over there this week!

That is what I would think also but from what I hear everytime something happens at this school it gets blamed on people who smoke. For example I heard there was an incident where some girls were hollering things back and forth at each other in front of the restart building and although there are several non smokers who go out there and walk everyday it was just assumed it was smokers. This wouldn't add up in my opinion because all the smokers go out the back door and are just in a hurry to get to their cars to smoke and probably wouldn't take the time to stop and yell profanity back and forth at one another. I guess I just assumed it was considered a "smoking incident" but I guess I should not assume things!

I have a friend who attends this program now and she said it was insaine. I've heard about people fighting in class and when someone does something wrong they all get in trouble. From what she has told me too though the instructors are also disrespectful and they do treat the students like four year olds by yelling and screaming at them and that situations weren't treated the way they should be. She said it was extremely hard and she is always studying.

Curious there are probably going to be these type of situations anywhere you go. This world is full of immature people no matter what their age and when you put a bunch of women in a room day after day with a lot of stress there are going to be disagreements. I sure as hell wouldn't let anything I read on the website change my mind about a school that's for sure! Good luck with whatever you decide!

I have heard that there is one extremely opinionated student who makes comments and rolls her eyes at people everytime someone asks a question or brings up something that is not in the book or on the power points. I have also heard that this lady is very narrowminded and argues with people over politics and what kind of food they should eat. I hear she rolls her eyes at the instructors all the time too and acts like she is superior or more intelligent than everyone else in the class. Now it is funny to me that the instructors don't realize how many people in the class that have had problems with this person and have not discussed this with her. There have even been students who have moved because they say they cannot concentrate for this woman sighing and griping under her breath everytime someone asks a question. So maybe this whole immaturity issue shouldn't be based solely on age, I wouldn't want someone this narrowminded being my nurse either and I would hate to ask my nurse or doctor a question and have the nurse roll her eyes and comment on how stupid I must be for not comprehending every detail the first time I heard them.

Yeah I've heard about this lady a lot, isn't she actually the oldest person in the class I think in her 40's?

Oh I am not sure about her age, my source just said she sits toward the back of their class and is always making comments and trying to make other people feel stupid! They also said they think sometimes she gets confused and thinks she is in a political science class, from what I hear she told one student they were a "complete moron" because of who they are voting for!

There was certain people in my class to like that when I went there. The instructors were also made aware and knew of the people who caused most of the problems and disruptions like that and did nothing about it. I'm all for the joking and cutting up becasue it was hard to sit there for 8 hours a day but the people like that were tremendous distractions.

As far as the fire goes does anyone know who started it? Are they still there? Was it investigated? I've heard several stories over the past couple of years but that is the worst one yet! That would have been a disaster for the dialysis patients below!

Yeah it's got to be the same person I've heard about! I know my friend calls me almost daily to vent about something that went on in class.

I don't know if there was actually an investigation, I don't even know if they ever figured out exactly what started the fire. I wonder if they even talked to the last people to use the bathroom before the fire was discovered I mean to see if they smelled anything or saw anything helpful. I agree though that anyone who would start a fire in any place but especially a medical facility should not be going into the medical profession. Oh and does anybody know what type of trash can it was or if it were sitting close to a heat vent or something where the toilet paper may have gotten hot enough to ignite? And what could someone have had in there burning that could have gotten that hot? Did somebody light a match to get rid of the smell and throw it in the trash before it went all the way out? I think someone should call Gill Grisom, he's leaving Las Vegas ya know!
