The banks remained closed to stop a run. They have the capital to reopen but they don't want to.

Looks like depositor's will lose 40% of their money based if they have over 250,00 in the bank. So that means someone who has worked all their life has to give almost half of their money to the government. But I'm sure bubu is ok with this because unless there is a run on food stamps everything will be ok. Sound about right bubu?

They're getting their money with maximum withdrawal limits. When the crisis is over restrictions will be lifted. Some depositors will be subject to some theft described as a tax.

The government of Cyprus has choice on which accounts they tax. Cyprus is used as a tax haven in eastern Europe for the extremely rich. In all likelihood the only people that will lose money are the people in Europe dodging their own country's tax laws to abuse the Cypriot economy.

It is a terrible precedent for the EU to set though, even if it was the only way to avoid an economic collapse that would have dragged down the entire EU with it. A lose-lose situation.

Umm, Dan Rather, we can read many reliable news sources on this topic via the internet; you know, the same place you're getting your information. Not trying to be rude, but just sayin that if anyone is that interested, they will probably read it from a more reliable source. Just sayin.

Cyprus should withdraw from the Euro. Greece too.

Quite so. The Euro was an ill-advised experiment from the start. Anyone with an ounce of sense could see it would fail. At least some good came of it in the form of stopping the talks of a similar currency model being adopted by North America.
