Icy Trees, Icy People

I moved to Shutesbury a few yrs ago, wanting peace & quiet & nature. But I also wanted a small town and what I thought would be the friendly atmosphere of a small town. But during the whole time I've lived here, I've encountered little more than frostiness. My neighbors actually look away when I wave hello. No kidding. I would wonder if it's me, but they don't even know me. And it's not like we're on a subway in Boston. These are people who live one house down from me!
I had to wonder when I saw a recent story in the paper about how Shutesbury residents "came together" after our ice storm. Where are these people? Not one of my neighbors checked to see if I was OK, and my yard looked like a tornado had gone through. I was without heat or water.
I truly wish I could find some friendly people in this town. Otherwise, as soon as the housing market picks up again (and I pray that it will), I'm outa here. I hope others have had better experiences here? If so, please comment and let me know there's hope!
I'm writing this on Christmas, reflecting I suppose on community and togetherness. I am sad tonight.

So, you list yourself as being from Worcester. You wave at neighbors... that's good. Ever talk face to face? Find out what you have in common? Ever attend town functions, do anything with or for the school, town hall, Athletic Club, Lake Wyola Association, Friends of the Library, Shutesbury Education Foundation... ever sign up for townwide emailings on the town website? Ever browse that website? Belonging is a two way street.

Okay... the Worcester part may not be by choice. I got listed as Worthington, and I didn't do that... I'm in Shutesbury, and frankly, probably won't stumble back on this site again...

OK, now I want to crawl under a rock for writing such a whiny post. I don't know what got into me, guess I was having an even worse week than I thought.
Of course I talk to people face to face. To be honest, I find the folks here a little reserved. But it was unfair of me to call people icy. So I take that back and hope you can forgive me. As my southern father would say, "When you're p.o.'d, keep your mouth closed until you're not p.o.'d anymore. Except when talking about the government." Will I ever learn?
I haven't tried most of the activities you mentioned, just town meeting. Thanks for listing them, that was kind of you. What is the athletic club like? Do you have to be a member?
Thanks, sorry for my grumpy post,
