Okay, so Pit Bulls are good dogs for guard dogs, but I so, so, so, disagree with your opinion of illegal activity and owning a pit bull. That is so stereotypical of a nimrod to say something like that. I own 3 pits and I work as a legal secretary for a law firm. How many people do you honestly think, feel that I have those dogs because I am doing illegal activities??? I would feel embarrassed to say some stupid stuff like that.
Portnoy wrote:
one problem with pit bull ownership is that many people that have meth labs (or other illegal stuff) get "guard dogs" to place around their area. not all guard dog owners are doing illegal stuff, but nearly all meth labs have guard dogs around them.
a pit bull is a pretty sure bet of illegal activity.

This whole topic is moot until the next city council election. Then will be the time to start lobbying the council for repeal.

I do not think you own your pit bulls because you are having illegal activities. Not anymore than I believe Jim Nabor or Rachel Ray or any of the folks that own them because they love the breed, their temperament, and loyalty.
Any dog has the capability to be as good or as bad as its owner, so those intending to do illegal stuff could own any type of dog and turn him/her ferocious.
Enjoy your dogs and suffer not due to small mentality.

I had to bring this back to discussion-level.

Two attacked a poor old man in Omaha yesterday. One was shot at the scene of the attack, and the other was still on the loose. There were warnings across the bottom of the TV warning folks to keep their small children inside.

More people are attacked by Cocker Spaniels than by any other breed of dog, so get off your I-told-you-so high horses.

Every day, people get bit by something somewhere, but only the unusual or "the animal of the decade" get as much publicity. Examples: Man gets mauled by tiger, man opens suitcase and has a rattler, man is bitten by pit bull (many dogs fall in this category, even when they are boxers), man has finger bitten by gorilla, in a fight, man bites another's ear.
Now, the every day other bites by shepperds, dobbies, spaniels, chihuahuas, etc. get absolutely no publicity, but they happen more frequently and some do terrific harm, but do not make it to the paper. It would be extremely interesting to find the actual percentages of bites per day and compare them to "pit bull" bites. Could Rachel Ray and Jim Nabors be wrong in owning multiple pits?

I would totally believe that cocker spaniels are a fiesty breed. We had two while i was growing up, one female when I was really little, and a male when i was in upper elementary. The female dog was wonderful and we loved her. However the male had first been brought up in a home with two toddlers and he was not a gentle, easy going dog. We ended up having him put down because he bit two of my friends (11 or 12 at the time and doing nothing to bring it upon themselves). Wasn't easy, but he couldn't be cured of that. I don't think it was all in how he was treated by the little kids but probably a combination of his temperment to begin with and learning to defend himself. He was bigger though, and probably could have done some damage if he had wanted to.

and by the way, i was a little insulted before when someone made the comment that kids are a lot like dogs in that they are clumsy and a little awkward and unsure of fast movements...something like that but i tell you what...i'm becoming more and more convinced that's a valid argument because i have a tot who quite frankly is all of those things. we've learned that he scares the living daylights out of the dogs and that its okay for them to interact as long as we're holding one or the other. I fear that too many parents trust their animals more than they should. I don't believe ANY animal can be trusted with a little one without serious supervision. Especially if the dog was in the home first. I think some dog owners don't worry enough about that and its a real danger.

As far as the dog is concerned, it's HIS house and his territory, and the baby is an intruder trying to challenge the dog's place in the order of things. It's simply a natural reaction on the part of the dog.

no animal is "bred" for fighting.you raise a dog by beating it or denying it food for days at a time it will get aggresive.a pit bull is a dog like any other dog! plain and simple.

Nope. Nope, you're dead wrong on this one. Pit bulls ARE inherently dangerous; that is exactly why they were bred. They were bred for strength and aggression, and they were bred to fight and kill prey.
They can go off quite unpredictably, and it takes an odd personality to risk owning one.
You. Are a MORON. To everyone who is against Pits you clearly are uneducated and have never truely expierienced the love of a Pit. SO shut your mouth
