Petrus Romanus is Latin for “Peter the Roman,” whose reign is prophesied to end with the destruction of Rome. According to this ancient prophecy, the very next pope (following Benedict XVI) will be the final pontiff, Petrus Romanus or Peter the Roman. The final segment of the prophecy reads:

In the extreme persecution of the Holy Roman Church,
there will sit Peter the Roman, who will nourish the sheep in
many tribulations; when they are finished, the City of Seven
Hills will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his
people. The End.

And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.
