Are state and feds tying police grant money to DUI arrest quotas?

There are 10 comments on the Chicago Sun-Times story from Feb 11, 2012, titled Are state and feds tying police grant money to DUI arrest quotas?. In it, Chicago Sun-Times reports that:

Former Will County State's Attorney Jeff Tomczak calls it a "quota." And he said the language - found in the fine print of grants funding some suburban police patrols - could undermine drunken-driving cases when they reach a courtroom.

Quotas have always been in place, throw in court overtime and awards for the cops, and it is a recipe for being wrongfully aggressive.

So they are arrogant a**holes naturally then.
The day a cop helps me out is the day I die.
A lot of times they do more harm than good.

um yeah retired, awards given by madd, aadd, recognition and awards. You would know this if you were really a retired cop as you present yourself to be.

I was the police, was, I've been out for a few years now. Cops only want two things, to get paid, and to be left alone. They don't want to get dressed up and make speeches. I took more drunks home, or called their spouses to come and get them, than I wrote citations to. That is a fact. I neve got in trouble for not writing enough tickets because there was no set amount. As long as i was doing my job I never had to see the boss. At no time did a supervisor ever tell me I needed 5 tickets a week/day/month.
Before retiring I participated in those enforcement details, they targeted specific problems, seatbelts/dui's/ speeding in areas that had a higher rate of accidents. etc...
in one detail I stoped are car load for Speeding. In that one car no one (all kids 16-20), was wearing their seatbelts, two had warrants, one had dope. All that gets documented to send up to the Fed's to show that the detailsare effective and that they should continue. Otherwise the program will halt and the dollars will go elsewhere.
To sum it up, ya the officers may get a little extra money for the court time, IF court is on their off time but the reality is that they are probably in court for the other things they do anyway so that is a wash. Cops do not want to spend off duty time at award ceremonies, escpecially when not getting paid for them and they could be home with family and no cop wants to be told what they will do and who they will/will not arrest. I am not aware of any cop who would stand for this.

Yeah, they're making bogus arrests so they can get a certificate in a thin cardboard envelope.

Idiot.

I love how when cops chime in they act like they're great guys. You are so full of shit. I know cops and I know you do worse isht than criminals a lot. I really loved the part "Cops only want two things, to get paid, and to be left alone." Yeas it's called a civil servant job. You are paid to interact and be a role model which 90% of you are nowhere near being. LEFT ALONE? ARE YOU KIDDING? FIND ANOTHER LINE OF WORK IF YOU WANT TO BE LEFT ALONE. GET PAID? YOU CHOSE A CAREER WITH TWO-YEARS OF SCHOOLING? YOU GET PAID FROM TAXPAYER MONEY AND YOU WANT MONEY TO BE LEFT ALONE? YOU JUST SAID THE WORST THING A PUBLIC SERVANT COULD SAY DUMMY. I WISH YOU WOULD OF GOT SHOT. You speed, you abuse your privileges, I know about the dating of women of domestics disputes (of which most are lies), and how you pocket money and drugs. I ran into a cop's son growing up and he gave his son dope and bongs and so on. I know another one who knew of a drug dealer. I know another one who did even worse isht. STOP LYING. PEOPLE AREN'T STUPID AND THEY ARE GOING TO KNOW WHAT YOU DO.

Hallo, I guess I could have spelled it out for you a little better but I thought I took care of that in my last paragraph. What I actually meant was, be left alone by their supervisors. They want to get paid what they've earned and not have to be micromanaged. They want to have a nice career and retire and enjoy their families, something that for the most part they missed. They could, for the most part, care less about receiving awards. Not that it isn't nice to be recognized. The actual best thing one can do if they appreciate an officers efforts is to write that officers chief of police a letter detailing the facts and noting the appreciation.

I wasn't going to address your rant about bad police but in short, I don't believe you. I do know there are police who commit criminal acts but to attribute it as you do simply is not true. I compare it to the vehicle accident rate.

Police do get into traffic accidents, occasionally it is their fault. But if you compare the rate to the civilian population, it is much lower.

Sorry but you just seem to be an angry little man.
