I don't understand.....this is the definition of "Porter":

por·ter
Noun
;pôrt & ;r/

1. A person employed to carry luggage and other loads, esp. in an airport or a hotel.
2. A person employed to carry supplies on a mountaineering expedition.

Why are the Lockport HS Sports teams called the "Porters"? I've lived here just a few years now and I've asked many people, but nobody seems to have any idea of how/why Lockport "Porters" came about......the only guess some people had is that maybe it comes from the second half of the town's name? Does anyone here know how that came about?

Also, I've never been to a sports event at the High School, so I honestly don't know..... is there an actual "mascot"? Is it a boy dressed in a doorman-type uniform?

It's because we carry suitcases full of our tax dollars to Robinson Engineering on no-bid contracts every billing cycle.

I believe a porter was also the name used for the dock workers at the locks, which is what put Lockport on the map in the early days.

Yes, it's an old and confusing reference, but it is a big part of our history.

Porters helped guide the barges through the locks on the I and M canal. A lot of history involved in this mascot!!!!

The school needs to step it up and educate the community (many of them new) about what a Porter is. It is too bad that the current AD has ignored the needs of certain sports (football) and instead focused on getting rid of the traditional logo (that showed a barge traveling the locks) and replacing it with a generic circle LTHS that actually spells S H I T when you look at it upside down.(Seriously... Look at it) What a disgrace that new logo is! Between the new logo and all the yellow that teams are allowed to wear, the tradition of LTHS has been flushed down the toilet by an AD that knows nothing about our community! Last time I checked, the school fight song says... MAROON AND WHITE, FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT. There is no mention of yellow or gold in the fight song. Bring back the traditional L and get rid of all the other nonsense. No one in our historic community likes it or buys into it!

You sound as bad as the oddball complaining about the band. Get a life. I find it hard to believe the football team longs for anything. FYI - the new logo is actually a very old logo used years ago, and when some coaches came across it, they liked it & wanted to use it. How sad that you spend your free time analyzing logos upside down. Also, gold has been an accent color in our uniforms for years...maybe since the 1980's? Lastly, you should learn the order of lyrics in the fight song before you attempt to quote it. Happy Thanksgiving!

You are right and for those that care: Lockport is a former and still a port with its waterway. Therefore, the term was taken by LTHS and called the Porters. It won't be long before the carpetbagger "give away our town" Kelly will make his asinine comments on here. He was not born here, and he thinks he can talk to our residents like that.
What an azzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!

The the Porter tradition and use are a good thing to be embraced and promoted. So many high schools are developed on made up borders and have no true identity. To many of these schools they are to be admired for still developing strong school identities. I grew up in the western suburbs and we had no true town loyalties because our students came from many towns. Lockport has a great tradition and good foundation so let us stop screwing it up arguing over scraps. Remove all present city government and start over. There are many sane Lockport residents out here and we will clear the decks.

I am an 83 yr old lady and I am always right and for those that care: Lockport is a former and still a port with its waterway. Therefore, the term was taken by LTHS and called the Porters. It won't be long before the sexy "love of my life" Kelly will make his brilliant comments on here. I was not born here, and I think I can talk to the residents like that.
Kelly Turner, PLEASE do me up the azzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!
