They pay the taxes and get the money for the lumber removed every 5 years.

Oh, no. There goes the neighborhood.
The proposed ban stinks of course, it's better than most tho.
Please tell me this is internet bravado on your part, i actually have friends and family up nort IRL.

Eh, Tavern League caved and you have carpetbaggers like Lance (i'll still bang a smoker if it ups my image) Armstrong flown into Mosc ... eh, Madison.
It was shoved through commitee and put to the full houses in less than a week. Makes ya think they don't want 'input'.
More exemptions?
Radical Antis wanna move it up and tighten?
It's not a done deal.

On the upside as is it preempts local outdoor restrictions on property AND forbids punishment by proprietors license loss. A recipe for civil disobedience. And you end up with OH.
If MI doesn't follow suit it's gonna be a tense year. If MN passes bar exemptions before 7/1/2010
All bets are OFF.

I have a brother and sister-in-law in Wisconsin, too. He smokes (He's trying to quit. He's taking some weird medication that is supposed to counteract the "high" from nicotine), and he's all in favour of the statewide law. He's written to legislators and letters to the editor, etc.

I don't expect Minnesota to exempt bars. Those bar exemption bills get introduced around the country and other than Nevada, they don't go anywhere. In Montana, the sponsor pulled the bill without even formally introducing it because he said there's no public support.
I don't expect Michigan to do *anything* with a smoking ban this year and maybe not even next year. Frankly, they have a lot bigger problems to deal with in Michigan than indoor smoking.

The "weird medication (Chantix) he is taking is probably making him do strange things like writing in favor of a ban. CYA too because many who have taken Chantix have become sucidal and homocidal.

Senator Sullivan’s support for statewide smoke ban stokes recall
District bar owners look to remove Waukesha area’s only Democrat

By JOE PETRIE - GM Today Staff
May 13, 2009

WAUKESHA - State Sen. Jim Sullivan, D-Wauwatosa, has become the first recall target in the wake of a potential smoking ban in Wisconsin.
A group of tavern owners from West Allis is planning to file recall exploratory committee papers against Sullivan as early as today for his support for a smoking ban in all workplaces.

Apparently, both Wisconsin and North Carolina are voting today on smoking bans. Their votes may take place within a couple of hours of one another.

"Homocidal?"
Does that mean he'll want to kill gays?
I think that's the guy in Kentucky.

"homicide" Excuse the error. If he happens to come after you and you are gay, it won't much matter how it's spelled. However, the spelling error was careless of me....my humble apologies. As for Chantix, I find nothing humorous about that drug. Hopefully, Pfizer will suffer the wrath of families who have lost loved ones due to their greed. Class action suits are in progress, and since Pfizer and the FDA rushed its release; it won't take much to win them. As for anyone who would suggest taking Chantix to anyone they claimed to love, they deserve to be sued also.

I don't know what he's taking. He didn't tell me the specific name of the drug. he just said, "I'm trying a new medication." He's basically tried everything -- nicotine patches, nicotine gum, cold turkey, etc. He has high blood pressure and is also freaked because our dad died of lung cancer, so there's likely a genetic predisposition in our family to lung cancer.
Funny thing is, plain old bubble gum worked great for me for quitting. But, I was 16 so it was easy to quit.

I'm being serious here, so take it for what it is. The electronic cigarette is, IMO, the best way to stop smoking tobacco. I use it, and without even thinking about stopping smoking, I have cut back from a pack a day to 3-6 cigarettes a day simply because I actually prefer using the e cig. Most people who use them quit smoking cigarettes completely. I chose not to do that. They are a ton less risky than prescription drugs like Chantix and Wellbutrin. Seriously, if you love this person and you find that he does not have success with the drugs, buy him one. I am not kidding when I say that the thought of taking Chantix sends chills down my spine...a very frightening drug that can zap the pleasure zone in your brain (that is how it works)and take away not just the desire to smoke but also the desire to do anything pleasureable.

I’d heard it was the most effective stop-smoking drug yet. So I took it. Then those reports of suicidal ideation began washing in.

Intro:
The most unsettling thing about sleeping on Chantix is that I never felt like I was truly asleep. Some part of me remained on guard. It was more like lucid dreaming, what I thought it might feel like to be hypnotized. And it didn’t entirely go away come morning. As I showered, shaved, and scrambled into clothes, I tried to shake a weird, paranoid sense that I’d just been psychically raped by a household appliance....

I live in Chicago where bars and restaurants have recently been banned from having smoking and it is great! I can wear my coat to the bar and I won't have to have it cleaned. As an asthma sufferer it's so nice to go out to eat and to a bar and breath!!! I also have a place in Wisconsin and hate to go out to eat and have to smell that crap. Small diners that allow smoking during breakfast, YUCK! I can't believe smoking hasn't been banned from the workplace, geez get with it Wisconsin. The smoking ban has not hurt the restaurant/bar business in Chicago so don't listen to those old arguments when you debate. Good Luck Wisconsin, I hope the next time I am in town I can breath when I go out to a restaurant!

If he works in an office where the rule is 'smoke em if you got em' i can be more than sympathetic. Heck, i'd call his boss, throw around some credentials and make a suggestion or two.
BUT, and i don't mean to be (too) harsh ... He wants the state to be his nanny and shoo all the bad influence away to better his chances of success?
*shakes head*
It's certainly a hard habit to break and i wish him success but can't help emphatically disagree on principle.
This guy puts it better than i could.

Of course an editorial like this would never get published in the Trib.

I remember a fellow bar patron here in chicago saying the same thing before our ban went into effect. Standing there with a cig in his hand....
I simply 'baahed' like a sheep and walked away.

Like Sheri said, he needs to be VERY careful if it's Chantix.

Public support? Yeah right.
When the public is given the opportunity to VOTE on these things they barely pass AND in the case of NV, FL and AZ(sorta) 3/4 they have bar exemptions.
Kinda hard for the 'public' to have a say when the Healthist/Pharma cabal pumps in teh cash ... and celebrities.
Still, MN's ex bill has co-sponsors and they're not all Rs either. That wasn't the case in Montana. In OH there's even more co-s and with PA allowing bars to be free makes it even more likely.
Pendulums swing.
Doyle and Co WILL be slammed for letting the Casinos go. It's not fair because the tribes are independent, but that's politics.
Plus, the lodging industry is totally up in arms over the 100% rule.
It is a fragile compromise.

Wait! Second hand smoke on private property ISN'T the biggest issue for some americans?
