Just more smoke and mirrors by Stevie Levy... Dickie Dormer and his cast of clowns... not a surprise! It's truly a shame (and sham) that the County Legislature has to go to the unions and read Newsday to get the straight story on how the County is running... it's something Stevie would have been RAISING hell over when he served... but I guess we all know his act... do as I say... and not as I do! Time for the REVOLT folks!

I believe when this program first started the county hired 5 "dedicated operators" to handle the non-emergency line.

MCR you seem to be well informed about the system, but it may be all well and good for a bank, cablevision, or any type of non-emergency service where someones life isn't on the line.

this is a joke, right? they don't come anyway so what is the big deal. the only way you can get them there is a hurry is to lie about some violence, like a gun involved. Then they come running, not to protect you but to back up themselves.

As I mentioned in a previous post there was a burglary of a private home when the alarm went off at 950am, they didn't arrive until 1120am. The burglars have their own scanners and lookouts to inform their inside guys. In this case they had enough time to go into the basement and tear up a safe bolted to the floor and get 32K in cash from a local businessman. Yeah, they are real Johnny On the Spots that you can depend on . 950am and not a car to be had. Oh, sure, 99% of them are false so why bother to respond at all.

In the case I was investigating there were two alarms right next to each other. One was silent and they didn't bother to send a car while the other one some citizen had the good sense to say there was a man with a gun in the place. The damned alarm was deafening, you could hear it on the radio.

Yup, real dangerous place StJames is: two burglaries going off at the same time right next door to each other, and the DA would have you believe they were committed by two different sets of burglars. But that scenario wouldn't fit their prosecution because the bozo informants never bothered to mention it and the detectives never asked. Why spoil a frame job when you don't have to.

somebody should find out how fast they respond to The Sports Authority where Dormer worked and got a 10K consultancy fee while he was the police commissioner. Wanna bet a call to the sports authority is an 'emergency'?

hey PETEF ...did u buy your alarm system from some big name dependable alarm company that promised immediate response??? and did u ask that alarm company how they can guarantee another agency's response time???(scpd or any other dept)...the pd is not your personal false alarm responder...that should be comforting when u or your family is injured in a car accident or youre having a heart attack and he responds to you before he checks out joe blows 10th false alarm for that month....alarm companys are having the last laugh at all of you!!!!!!!!! they rake in the bucks each month...and all they have to do is call the police...hey your neighbor will do that for free!!!!!

Steve Levy is lying when he says 911 is NOT understaffed. If anyone thinks that 12 operators (9 once the meals and breaks start) is enough then I guess he's not lying--and if he thinks that's enough, so be it--but when theres a motor vehicle accident (no matter how minor or how serious) or a fire or disabled motorist or a traffic light malfunction or any other occurance in the sight of the public, hundreds of people will call from their CELL PHONES to report what has already been reported--therefore tying up the lines CONSTANTLY!!!!!! This problem unfortunatley will never stop but i don't understand how you can have the same amount of operators in 2008 that you had in pre-cell phone days--and tell the public there is no shortage!!!!!!!!!! He will know theres a manpower shortage when someone he knows or some big shot in the county is in need of police or ambulance and gets a recording instead!!!!! Thats usually how it works, anyway.

Pete's rather disturbed over anything involving SCPD. While his former agency has deteriorated into an embarrasment, Suffolk is virtually a scandel free dept.

SCPD gates 1,000 false alarms a day. Business owners and residences are supposed to send a representative with keys to check their own premises and not depend entirely on the PD like the confused senior whines about.

But SCPD was good enough to put his bum S-I-l in jail. The kid is a disgraced ex-cop who is in the can for setting off a number of alarms himself. Good work PD in identifying and prosecuting a felon.

This article is a perfect example of why all Marine and Aviation response should be handled by local volunteer fire departments.
Why can't we have our own helicopters and boats like the cops?
We could get to accident scenes faster, and do our own med-evacs before the cops get there.
We are TRAINED PROFESSIONALS, who WORK FOR PRIDE, NOT A PAYCHECK!

Are you KIDDING ME? Sure.... 200 more helicopters and boats funded by the taxpayers! Do you really think that would be cost effective? Do you think the folks in Gordon Heights that pay the highest FD/Rescue taxes in the county can now add a helicopter to the fleet? How about the cost of repair and operation? Get real my friend!

I tried calling the COPS number twice and gave up after a few minutes of press 1 for this 2 for that to instead dial 911 direct. There was large debris on the highway making cars swerve all over to avoid it... so I guess it was important. Oh, the other time was kids on the roof of a school building hanging out.

Steve Levy is about smoke and mirrors. He is nothing more than a glory seeking politician. A friend's home was broken into while she was at work. When she got home she found a broken door and pryed windows. I went over because she was afraid to be in the house. The call to 911 involved being put on hold because all the operators were busy. Then it took Suffolk's finest almost 2 hours to respond. I called back after an hour and was told by some smart a$$ 911 operator that the police were "busy". I told her this wasn't a false alarm - the house had been broken into. All I got was attitude. The SCPD has a problem and Levy is making it worse by cutting manpower and then trying to cover it up with his BS smoke and mirror press conferences. We have to vote this bum out of office.

If you want to know that a Police Officer will respond then just put all those calls through to NYPD. They will dispatch a car. Might take an hour but so will Suffolk Police. It could save money also. NYPD is like No Name brand laundry soap, cheaper but gets the job done.

Suffolk Police has a Medical Swap Team! Give us a break! Hay maybe, just maybe that's why there are no Police Officers to go to the 911's. Their all training for Medical Swat! LOL, LOL, LOL all day. Fun a Taxpayer's expense.

What is the big deal?? This is not news!

Should we hire an entire new force to answer these calls? NO, use the force you already have more efficiently.

So, the question that should be asked (but our politicians are TOO DUMB to ask) Has there been any delay in the 911 Operators response time when this change happened? Have they increased the 911 operators workforce to compensate?

Police on the water at night - do we really need this?? Remember, this fluff is not free. People need to take a little responsibility for themselves - if they need a rescue at night, they should have recognized that risk before they went out at night.

He's probably the liason to the PBA so anytime there is talk of taking away a benefit he contacts the marketing department to run the PBA ads that predict high crime if you cut their salaries

And how did Levy cause this? Would you prefer he raise taxes to over-pay the SCPD more? Maybe the problem is, as always, the UNION that doesn't want their members to work too hard. Please, the fact that a UNION worker is in-efficient should be no surprise to anyone.

That goes for any union worker, not just the PBA. The only ones that think UNIONS are worth anything are Union members, for obvious reasons.

And save your comments on how I'm jealous, I have no desire to be a union member of any workplace.
