Three people were rescued from the waters of the Long Island Sound after their canoe overturned Sunday evening off a Stony Brook beach, the Suffolk police said.

Incredible luck that a cell phone was operable after being dunked in salt water. Lets face it, kids at this age will do dangerous things like this for the adreneline rush it gives them. To be honest, I did the same sort of things, some of them far more dangerous. The story has a happy ending, and I wager, these three will have a much more mature understanding about what is fun and what is plain stupid.

yes, what they did was very very stupid, to not wear life jackets.....but for someone to say here on this board, no life jacket too bad they didnt drown..that is just heartless, rude and mean...they are going to learn and learn in a big way hopefully after this! Thank GOD they are alive.

They are extremely fortunate in that they did not succumb to a phenomenon known to experienced cold-weather boaters as the "gasp reflex". When a human being is suddenly immersed in very cold water they have an involuntary reflex that makes them gasp for air, regardless of whether their head is under water or not. That's why kayakers who have any training at all wear wetsuits (or something similar) at this time of the year, and PFDs at all times.
