My faimly and I have been a patient of Dr. Bernards for 20 years. I say that with pride and conviction. He saved my daughter's life and always treated us with kindness and respect. More importantly I have been a friend of Terry and she a friend to me. She is a kind, empathetic, sweet women who always had a hug for me during very tough times. And until you have dealt with this type of illness Dr. Bernard is right "people don't understand." You truly find out who your friends are. There is not a perfect person among us. We are not here to judge or tear another soul down. Hang in there Bernard family there are still those of us out there that care and understand.

This family has some serious problems that they need to deal with, the least of which is idiots on Newsday.com slinging mud at them. If you people had anyone near and dear to you experience addiction you'd feel differently - you'd feel some compassion and empathy for your fellow man.

They are very nice people, and Robert's practice is great. I've been going there for over a decade.

All of the hate and vitriol spewed from people who may or may not have worked at the practice in the past needs to stop. If you indeed worked there, then who's to say if what you are saying is the truth - who is to say that you're not just some jilted employee with a grudge? If false (and in my opinion, they most likely are), those statements could be construed as libel/slander. The same goes for the idiots who did/do frequent the practice.

To all the people who criticize and rank on her or the family, you people don't realize how horrible addiction truly is, and how hard it is to fight it/defeat it. It may seem like she just got a knee injury, took pain meds, decided she liked 'em, and decided to take prescription slips to keep on taking the meds. You don't realize how addicting some of these drugs are.

Let's just all hope that she gets the treatment she needs. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Hopefully now she'll get treatment

Trouble can knock on your door anytime .How you deal with it is what character is all about. When trouble knocks on your neighbors' door that is when humanity and compassion count. IT COULD HAPPEN TO ANYONE!!!
Bob and TerryAnn Bernard were always good neighbors. When a family member was sick they always helped when asked. Alot of people have too much to say about other people's business. If you have something bad to say don't say anything at all!
Even if everything is true they have only hurt themselves and people are innocent until proven wrong, right? Have a little compassion for a family who has treated many with care and consideration. Godspeed on your recovery, TerryAnn! I hope your family remains together and you all weather this storm.

I have know Bernard for over 25 years. I know him very well, personally. He has a dark side to him, of intense insecurity. He is too quick to diagnose and arrogant in his standing as a physician.

Wake up readers, he was well aware of his wife's unfortunate circumstances and I would be very surprised if he himself does not also need a long stretch in rehab. She is a lovely woman, too good for him and he knows this. He is not to be trusted and she knows this. He has worn her down.

I hope she gets the help she needs, without his intervention since he is a know-it-all. She will wise up, and hopefully get on with her life, and he will also get rehab and counseling, but keeping his license to practice medicine should be a problem. He knowingly risked it and always has had that risk-taking side to him, b/c he thinks he is smarter than everyone else. That was on open display with all the talking he did in the Newsday article.

Robert, for once, shut up! You are burying her legal defense. You still don't understand how deep the water is.

They should have put a stop to this problem the minute they realized they were in its frightful grip. Now Big Brother will do it for them.

GET A GOOD CRIMINAL ATTORNEY AND GET THE ENTIRE FAMILY INTO INTENSE COUNSELING, AND THEN BEG OPM FOR UNDERSTANDING, GOOD LUCK. START TAKING CARE OF YOUR FAMILY AND PAY ATTENTION TO TERRYANN. YOU OWE HER BIGTIME. AND MAY GOD HELP YOU ALL.

Good for you, everything you said about Dr. Beranrd is on the money. And if you were every examined by him ever notice he has a constant running nose, constantly sniffing???? I joked with him about it and he says it's his sinuses, and the a/c in the office,OK!And the TITANIC never sunk. For other people taking his side if you were never a patient of his you wouldn't understand, and if you disagree with any of his findings he really getshis feathers ruffled, years ago I'd tell everyone to use him,Today I think he lost his passion and commitment as a Doctor.Sorry to all that still use him but no doctor is worth a 3 hr. wait.

Sir you might be correct, but I also was a long time patient with Bernard (over 15 yrs)and yes I would agree theres not an office staff that can compare,But Bernard has a real issue with preaching drug abuse and if his wife was this addicted it's impossible to go un noticed, these aren't just regular scipt pads she was stealing they are federal scipts, that the doctors are to have on there person at all times, and you call alot of people hear idiots for slinging mud, well that is what a forum is for,to speak your mind and oh yes I almost forgot, the right of all people under this nation has the privlage to speak there mind, good or bad it's called "FREE SPEACH"And yes I hope she gets proper help, with someone other than her husband.God Bless free speach.

Seems like people can easily forget that doctors are people too and are all too fallible and prone to fall as we all are. I don't know this doctor or his wife. I read good and bad comments from personal experiences from people like you - I appreciate your comments and the effort you make to say them...hopefully you are also putting your comments someplace useful too, like a doctor review message board for people looking for a new doc! My story is probably similar to 1000's of others; back injury, chronic pain, pain killer abuse and dependency before we even knew what happened to us. Keep that perspective folks when judging others like this. What would you have done if your spouse was a doctor with a script pad so easily within reach? Tis true though, no two docs are alike and it seems harder and harder to find a good and patient focused one, with compassion, who has not fallen so easily into the mechanized routines of "managed care." Where are the docs to help us when the bad docs lead us astray? Mine stranded me over the weekend with no painkillers and now I am suffering a forced withdrawal from opiates with two herniated discs...not fun! I wish this family luck with the wife's addiction.
Oh you are so on target, and if I lived there by you I would loan you a couple to hold you off.

It seems as if Mr. Lohman has a few issues: a little pent up anger, for God knows why and obviously TOO much free time! Regardless of the 5-W's this is their business. Imagine if all of our darkest secrets became public forum? There are many addictions in life, some legal, some not, who is ANYONE to point a finger...there are apparantly 2 people that actually have first hand knowledge and I seriously doubt it is any of you bloggers. Why don't we let them take care of their business privately and stop kicking people when they are down? If you find yourself logging on here everyday to comment on someone else's misery, YOU NEED TO FIND A JOB!!!

So what are people who are in real pain supposed to do? Opiates have been around since the begining of time, other drugs like Vioxx and Celebrex cause additional health problems to patients. There is a fine line but the DEA has decided to put fear into doctors who prescribe and like insurance companys think they are doctors now and know what is best. Personally, I am 31 and wake up everyday in severe pain, it causes me to loose focus on work, home life etc. Bouncing on a ball and having suction cups placed on my back 2x a week does not help me sleep or feel any relief.Something has to change if all the junkies would get help people that are in REAL PAIN could find some relief.

I believe you're speaking of just this individual. All men definitely don't abuse women.
Take me for instance. I hardly ever abuse my girlfriend.

The three hour wait in his office was not only due to it being a walk-in clinic. The addicts in the area have, more than likely, spread the word that the doctor will prescribe what they want. You might be amazed at the number of physicians and pharmacists who "self-medicate," because, in most instances, it is kept very quiet. They are sent off to rehab, then monitored in a peer-assistance program. The "everyday common junkie" must past through society's gauntlet of shame. Those who suffer true chronic pain end up being denied the relief they desperately need, because doctors are too afraid or biased to risk their licenses to give it to them.
