Mouse Moment;

Tomorrow, Feb 2nd is Ground Hogs Day in the United States, well except in Alaska. In 2009 Alaska changed the traditional "Ground Hog's Day" to "Marmot's Day" ... through a bill introduced by Sen. Linda Menard, a Wasilla Republican and signed into law by then Governor Sarah Palin.

Sarah was quoted saying, "We don't have many ground hogs in Alaska but we have a lot of marmots".

Happy Ground Hog's Day Sarah.

David Wheeler and his wife Francine lost their six year old son Benjamin in the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre. Mr. Wheeler testified before a government commission yesterday. Not the US Senate Commission that was covered well by the media ... no, Mr. Wheeler was testifying before a Connecticut State Commission on gun saftey reform in their state.
If you haven't hear this man's testimony, you should take a few moments and listen to him speak rationally about what measures should be taken to prevent at least some of these tragedies from occuring again.
No need to be biased because it's a MSNBC video, it just hasn't been placed on youtube yet. Forget Lawrence O'Donnell long enough to hear Mr. Wheeler.

Mouse Moment;

"Elaine, An Immigration Success Story"

Elaine arrived in the United States in 1961 from aboard a freighter ship at age 8.

Elaine, along with her 5 sisters and mother (Ruth) came to America from Taiwan to be united with her father (James) who had 3 years earlier arrived in New York to begin a new life after previously escaping a communist China resulting from the Chinese Civil War (1949).

James had began his career as a merchant mariner and later, after getting established in New York, built a successful shipping company (Foremost Shipping Co.).

By 1975, Elaine had received her B.A. in Economics from Mount Holyoke College and her MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1979.

Elaine also studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dartmouth College, and Columbia University. In addition, Elaine has received 34 honorary doctorate degrees.

In 1983, Elaine's family connection to shipping was instrumental in her application for a White House Fellowship being granted, and in 1986 she became Deputy Administrator of the Maritime Administration in the US Department of Transportation.

From 1988 to 1989, Elaine served as Chairwoman of the Federal Maritime Commission under the Reagan Administration and in 1989, President George H. W. Bush nominated Elaine to be Deputy Secretary of Transportation.

From 1991 to 1992, Elaine was Director of the Peace Corps. She was the first Asian Pacific American to serve in any of these positions.

In 2001 Elaine became the first Asian-Pacific American woman to ever be appointed to a US Presidential cabinet when GW Bush appointed her as Labor Secretary, an office she would hold for the entire 8 years of Bush's presidency.

Secretary Elaine Chao - arrived in here at age 8, a young immigrant by no real choice of her own, yet would go on to do all these extroidinary things in her life for the service of this country.

She should shine as a bright example of what President Obama has been saying about the value of immigrants who attend schools here and stay here to do great things.

Secretary Chao could have gotten her education in the United States and returned to Taiwan, or possibly even China ... but she stayed here,.....

and became Mrs. Mitch McConnell.

Should gun owners be drug tested randomly?

I reject the premise that illegal drug users can also be "responsible, law-abiding" gun owners.

Give that some thought.

Illegal drugs are ......... Illegal. Sure they should be randomly drug tested. Just like welfare recipients should be randomly drug tested.

I've been thinking about that for a while, and when this thread popped back up on my tracker, I decided I was ready to give my opinion. As gun owner, it would not bother me in the least to be tested for illegal drugs. And to go a little further, I wouldn't object to testing for illegal drugs be made a part of the background check. Any type of drug abuse on record should also be used in the background check. I don't believe that to be the answer, though. And' to be honest, I don't have a clue as to what the answer would be, except much better parenting. I gues I'm just dense in some areas. Y'all have a good'n.

Thank you.

Personally, I think it wouldn't be that hard to treat gun ownership like automobile ownership. Register your guns annually and any transfer of sales must go through the revenue office.

Sure you do.

Even after this has been tried in Florida and rejected because it costed the state an enormous amount more omoney toi pay for drug testing the poor than just feeding them.

The amount of positive drug testing in that program resulted in less than 2%,... all negative tests results became the debt of taxpayers,..... along with providing the food stamps as well.

Of course you would back that "test 'em to feed 'em" rightwing nonsense.
