Residents of Smith Point - Cleaning Up Our Neighborhood
Jenn in Shirley NY said in the Shirley Forum:
We started this thread because we really want to move forward with the quality of life issues in our community, however we do not want to be associated with the Smith Point Beach Property Owners Association as long as Delia and Dominic are involved. We are for the incorporated village, but are certainly willing to listen to those who aren't and their reasons behind their decision. We however, are NOT looking to start another civic association down here. If you are fed up and frustrated and want to move forward, please email us at SMITHPOINT11967@AOL.COM and supply us with your name, address and phone number. There are a number of things in the works to get us all back on track for the betterment of OUR community. This area has so much potential. Our goal is and always has been, to make our area a wonderful place to live, where our children don't have to be afraid to walk down the street, where the section 8 renters, the sex offenders, the gangs, the run-down rental properties are no longer welcome here. We want to hear your concerns, we want to enlist your help, we want you to be an active participant in everything that happens here. So, if you are ready to move forward, please round up your neighbors and friends and email us! Thank you, Eric and Jenn HakamI will be working on the Quality of Life issues for this area and really need your help. I would like each of you to please look around your neighborhood and make a list, with addresses, of things that need to be addressed. We are looking for run down properties, graffiti, abandoned properties, absentee land lords, violations, anything that you are concerned about. If you can provide pictures, that would be exctremely helpful.
Proposed Boundery for Smith Point
Smith Point Resident said in the Shirley Forum:
I live in Smith Point, unlike Delia, and I am proud of our community and don't know where Delia comes off trying to change our boundries for the possible incorporation. Smith Point has always considered itself a waterfront community that should end somewhere around the Estates. At the incorporation meetings Delia has taken it upon herself to move the boundry up to Lawrence and the Wm. Floyd, which from what I can tell has never been considered part of Smith Point. Did anyone ask the people up there if they want to be part of Smith Point or were the people in Smith Point asked if they wanted their boundry expanded. I think not. Historic Smith Point is our community and not Delia's and she better watch what she is attempting to do. It may just come back to bite her in the a**.I think this writer has a valid point about the bounderies. I'm curious as to why Bob Licari is the head of the village committee, when he also happens to be the President of the Woodlands Estates Property Owners Association. Also, why is the President of the Smith Point Beach Property Owners Association, Delia McKernan, also on the board of that association? Isn't this a conflict of interest? Additionally, John's Neck, the Canal (these neighborhoods have been part of the SPBPOA boundaries since the beginning), William Floyd to Flower and the area behind Home Depot to Floyd have also been cut out of the proposed bounderies, for what purpose? .The SPBPOA states that these area's are being cut out do to heavy rental population, however Keith Romaines office disputes this, stating there are as many rental properties on the West side of William Floyd Parkway as there are on the East side. The majority of homes in those areas are owner occupied and any rental properties that do exist could be dealt with by the incorporated village. The proposed incorporated village can only be 5 square miles, which common sense holds true that it should begin south from the peninsula and go north, not the other way around.
