Actually it said "selective mutism" not autism. Selective mutism is when a child can speak but does not. It usually involves control issues. The child controls the adults in his life by deciding when he will or will not speak.

Seeing as how the kid lives in that crappy apartment complex in East Patchogue, I think the kid would have been better off if someone had kidnapped him.

Yeah, I said it.

Patchogue-Medford I have been to this school many times, I was a sub teacher. I never seen a school so bad, this school belongs in the BRONX - the kids are animals, the parents are White Trash. This school is located in the most depressing area of long Island. This is Mastic, Shirley, Medford, Ghetto Trailer Park Trash at it's best! Parents are all Section 8, Wic, wellfare, 80% of the kids get free lunches becuase the parents qualify for it because they are loosers in this area.
I say turn this school in to a rehab center for ghetto re-tart skells plunger moneys.

Daniel has been diagnosed with selective mutism, a learning disability in which children sometimes remain silent in social situations.
I wish ALL children had this disorder. The problem with most kids is they don't know when to shut their big mouths. Kind of like their parents on the cellphone.
I don't know what parent in their right mind would wish selective mutism on any child... Selective mutism is not a learning disability, it is an anxiety disorder that causes such great fear in a child that they freeze up and CANNOT physically talk, and in some severe cases , like my son, CANNOT communicate at all. There are people who certainly should not be voicing their opinions in public, mainly those who don't know what they are talking about, but it's certainly not innocent children....

once again people , selective mutism is an anxiety issue, caused by fear, not a control issue as was stated , and corrected over 20 years ago.

That's what happens when you vote budgets down. They cut staff. This is the fault of the Patch-Medford voters.

The problem is Patchogue is the ghetto, white trash. This is how parents out East take care of there kids. They teach them to work the wellfare system, Section 8 free house, wic, foodstamps. This area of LI is Ghetto White Trash Hell. Parents and teachers out east have no idea how to take care of themselves not to say the cannot take care of kids.

The personalities of the personnel are (in my personal opinion) in question. However, how can one person judge the personnel without knowing the persons involved? Personally, the personal lives of the personnel are none of anybodys business. I am personally offended by some of the comments from the persons on this topix board. I take it very personally that you can sit here and criticize the personnel for their personal faults. Has not one person here made any mistakes?

No, I understand the difference. However, as a parent whose children go to the district, I want to know how he is handling this matter and what policy and procedures are being put in place to protect my children. If it happened at one school, I can guarentee it is happening in other schools. As a side note, I was in another school a few days later and you had to see how they acted when a child was spotted walking around the school un-escorted! Had it not been for this incident a few days earlier, that child might be in the same situation!

We are all so grateful that Daniel is safe. He is a wonderful little boy and a delight to have around.

Quite frankly, I am shocked at how this school handled children going to their school on a day to day basis; with no one keeping watch at all the exits/entrances of the school and making sure all the children in the school are safe. I think that any parent deserves that right if they are a) paying real estate taxes, and b) entrusting the care of their children to the principal and faculty of their school.

Shame on the principal and the school district, for that matter, in the handling of this case. I just hope that they now have some sort of system in place to prevent something like this from happening to another child in this school. If they don't, then they better put something in place immediately before something happens to another child. It could have been ANY ONE OF THE CHILDREN who go to that school regardless of what others say on this bulletin. He's 7 years old for crying out loud!!! Not an independent adult, or a teenager who would be able to put two and two together when certain situations arise. 7 year olds are still experiencing things in their lives and have no way of knowing how to handle most situations out there.

And just to clarify something with all of you who say he has "autism"... He has Selective Mutism, which is, by the way, not any shape or form of autism. It is a condition where a child would have excessive shyness in social situations and is too afraid to speak to a stranger. Kind of like social anxiety.

My family and I are just glad that little Danny is home safe and sound.

Why didnt your friend teach her son if there are no one in the classroom... Go back to the principals office. He was 7. Its May... He should know where the principals office is by now. Its not like he just started his first week there. Your blaming the school is unjust and foolish because you have to teach children responsibility as early as they can talk! My 3 year old nephew knows not to go outside the gate of his busy street without holding someones hand.
