Levy, taxes edge up as tax rate set

There are 6 comments on the Nashoba Publishing story from Dec 10, 2010, titled Levy, taxes edge up as tax rate set. In it, Nashoba Publishing reports that:

They don't make a recommendation to the selectmen. But the Board of Assessors presented data to the chief administrative board Tuesday night suggesting the same historic taxation tax "shift" or split between residential and commercial property owners that Ayer has had in place since 2008.

Who is Hogan? He is quoted several times, but his first name and title never appear in the story. Great writing.

Nobody seems to care that the town continues to either drive business away or convert business property to public use. In either case in a few years we will be a total bedroom community so the commercial tax rate won't matter.

Bacon Hill- Can you elaborate? I live in the town and I am not aware of any such movements by the town. If my information is wrong I'd like to know. What business have been driven away? What industrial land was taken for public use? Thanks.

Not aware of any industrial land taken for public use but one business that did move out of town was Horn Packaging which had multiple locations in Ayer and other towns. They consolidated everything to Shirley. Apparently there was not enough space to accomodate them in Ayer.
So, why then can't their vacant warehouse on Park Street be used for parking instead of taking the land where businesses are operating?

Horn does not own the Park St warehouse and has not for some time. A Littleton business man owns this and it is used as a storage facility for automobiles.
