Sounds just like the mid 70s before the real estate boom. Unfortunately there is no boom coming.

One of the major issues with the trade, has been for lack of a better term the 'invasion' of illegals who have taken over most of the trades. Landscaping, Painting, Roofing, and Sheetrock and plastering have all been decimated. And they are making inroads in the electrical and plumbing areas. It's very hard to compete against people who will work for $10 per hour and ask for cash payment, and with an army of 20
people, will re-roof a house in less than a day.
And not pull permits, nor pay taxes.
I know a number of legit contractors who have gone under as a result of this.
Another view is some of today's generation have the
"the world owes me" attitude, and would rather be a couch potato with their ipod and nintendo system.
I have a 25 year old nephew who for all intents, is a professional slob, has had over a dozen jobs in the past 3 years and wants to move to Florida where he can party all the time and get on welfare or some other form of assistance.
Down the road, there will be a shortage of skilled people to fix things, and this will be a major issue.

There's a book out called "blue collar and proud of it" which is about how this country was built by tradesman, and what is happening now in the trades.
A decent read IMHO.
