7 hurt in Long Beach Island deck collapse
#1 Jul 31, 2007
A deck collapse occurs, on average, once a week in the U.S.; five have been reported so far this month. 92% of the deck failures, reported, over the past five years, have involved the deck-to-house floor joist assembly.
Decks are usually attached to a single board of the house (the house band board). The band board was never intended to resist the pullout action that occurs with a deck. This attachment method is a flaw in the design of decks that is just now being universally recognized. The end result of the improperly designed connection is that, with people moving on the deck, the deck fasteners either pull out of the band board or simply pull the band board out of the house, allowing the deck to collapse.
Bolting the deck to the house band board does not stop deck collapse. The bolts will usually hold the deck ledger board to the house band board and the deck will simply pull the band board off of the house, allowing the deck to collapse.
