I just watched a documentary in shiwtime called " the wild and wonderfull whites of west virginia". It was about the White family from Boone county. It was one of the most flipped out shows I have ever seen. So i started looking up that family tree, mamie, bessie mae, jaco etc. And all i can say is it no wonder why wv bri gs visions of jerry springer! And then i stopped to think, damn i know alot of ppl just like that family! Wow

This movie is also available through Netflix (if you don't subscribe to Showtime). It was produced by Johnny Knoxville of "Jackass" fame, who really has no vested interest in making WV look good. It's interesting that not one normal WV family is depicted in the film to allow any kind of comparison or proof that we're not all like the Whites.
The movie trailer is on YouTube and is also posted on the movie's official website...enjoy:

In fairness, the movie is funny as hell and quite entertaining.

I agree it was very funny and intertaining and also about the not one "normal" family in it. Lol. Growing up and visiting chicago( where i am orginally from) someone once asked me if wv had sidewalk or just all dirt roads?!? If we r not on tv for the springer show, coal mining or " wrong turn" fame it would b a miracle. Wish they wld show how honest, hardworking most if us are. And how we are always gkad to help a neighbour out... Kno how that goes. Still love knocksville stuff though!!!!

I'm originally from PA, but moved here over 15 years ago. And, yes, a PA acquaintance once asked whether my children wore shoes to school.

The only reason no other families are depicted is because the purpose of the documentary was to follow up oh Jesco White after the Dancing Outlaw doc. The 'jackass' guys were fascinated by him and his lifestyle. The purpose was to document the life of someone who lives on the fringe of society. Hence the term documentary. I doubt they had ulterior motives to make WV look bad. If you actually watched the doc you would have seen interviews with other people in the community begging not to be judged by the antics of one family.

I think the most important thing that the doc showed is that they are a family. No matter how screwed up and crazy they may seem. They stick together. I think the scenes with Jesco talking about his father, and the children watching there mother dying were some of the most emotionally moving scenes I have witness. They showed real heartache and a family losing their rock. I think the kind of person you are reflects what you take away from this documentary.

Read some books from WV authors about growing up in the hills here. Our state was founded on the coal industry and how it forced people to live. Not everyone makes it out on top. We do have to have bottom to have a top, right? Bertie Mae White raised over 20 children, they lived up in the hills in Boone. Just think about what that is like.

I could go on about the subject for hours. I love the White family. I wish them the best. I hope they persevere and can all be happy.

As for idiots outside of WV asking stupid questions and making assumptions... Are you really worried about what someone ignorant enough to ask a question like that thinks? Do you not think every state has their own set of underprivileged people living in poverty? You say you are from PA, have you ever BEEN there? I have been through some pretty poor parts of every state on the east coast. Especially PA.

just to reiterate, it is not a documentary about WV, it is specifically about the White family. A little comprehension and context goes a long way.
