I found a dog, it has no collar and is friendly. he is skinny and his feet are worn from running.

I took him to the vet and they wormed him and gave him shots. I've had him for about 2 weeks but can't find his owner. I put ads in the paper and put up posters and called vets. He has no microchip.

I called the police and they said my township does not have animal control. I called the humane society but they were very rude to me and said they were full with a 6 month waiting list. They said since I have been feeding him he is MY dog now and they can't help me. I can't keep this dog for 6 months!!!

Is there anything else I can do? He is a nice dog, I don't want to have him put to sleep. Are there any other shelters in the Bemidji area I could try?

That's a problem I've encountered with the local humane societys. I've taken in animals that I've had to keep because they had no place for them. I once brought a severely injured kitten into our local vet (the humane society was closed) and ended up having her put to sleep because the only other option was to hold onto her until the Humane Society called me back, and she likely would have had to be put down anyway. One winter I took in a black lab and her six puppies. I found homes for the puppies, and eventually the humane society found a home for the Mom. Maybe a friend of yours could temporarily keep the dog? If he's a nice dog, surely somebody will want him....sounds like you've done a very thorough job of advertising him. You could also try Petfinder.org .

Good Luck!

He is a nice dog. He looks like he is part lab.

I don't have any friends or family in the area that can take the dog. I tried calling the Humane society today and talked to the lady in charge. She said "It is not MY problem. It is YOUR problem because he is now YOUR dog since you are feeding him and vetting him"

She also told me that if I want to drop "my" dog off at the shelter it is 50 dollars to do so. Why? He is already newtered and I bought his shots for him.

Is there any other place in the Bemidji area that animals can go besides this humane society??? There has to be something else that actually CARES about animals.

Hey CJ there is a rescue in the area too, they are much better than the inhumane society and they actually help animals and are not on a glory trip. If you want to know about them just email me- kisses4fluffies@yahoo.com
