It's sad to me that organizations like KKK are able to exist still today. Hatred against an entire race of people based of what? Aren't white people in the wrong for enslaving them in the first place? It's one thing to make a mistake, it's another to learn from it. Sometimes in order to do that you must step outside the box and look at the whole pisture. It's easy to say that racism is ignorace, which I agree, however how the problem remedied is a bit more difficult. What are these hateful people teaching their kids?
Its sad that the NAACP still exists today !!

ok basing the thoughts of a whole county on a set number thats not 100% is kind of discriminatory in its own right. i dont care what race you are if im gonna hate you im gonna hate you as a person so dont even start that you just hate me because im "insert said race" bull shit. as for obama he can kiss my ass Kentucky wasn't important enough for him to campaign through he's already proved his preacher is racist "yes it works both ways" i think hes a bit of a discriminator as well.

I am sorry for all the untruths that have been posted, this is a great place to live and raise your children, and grandchildren, I am a older gentlemen, and live in a wonderful neighborhood, i am proud to live in Shepherdsville and call everyone my neighbor. If you live in a fine house or a trailer, we all neighbors, and equals in every way. My heart and prayers go out to those who harbor unkind thoughts against each other. If you visit Shepherdsville, I suggest you vist Bernheim Forrest, it is 14,000 acres of beauty, visit the banks of Salt River and study its past. My suggestion is that you come judge for yourself what a wonderful place this is. And, how friendly the people really are. Then submit your post.

I grew up in Shepherdsville and think I know why that stupid comment is still perpetuated about Bullitt County is a dangerous place for minorities. At one time the Grand Dragon of the Klu Klux Klan lived off of 44 hill. His wife and children were great folks but his reputation was detrimental to all of them. He has been dead a long time now, but the rumor persists. I also think several prominent men belonged to the Klan at one time. That is probably a rumor, but Mr. S. A. was the Grand Dragon.

This stuff flamed up in the 60's and 70's just like it did everywhere else at the time. Unfortunately, our county WAS the home of a grand dragon or whatever they're called and as I recall, most of the people in the county stayed as far away as possible from him and his beliefs. Right now the biggest problem in Bullitt County is the manufacture of meth. From everything I've seen reported, that is the "white trash" disease. Does saying that make me a bigot?

Sherman Adams was not able to leave behind any kind of legacy at all. He was not feared or respected. Most people that I know could have cared less. If you notice, we do not have a Sherman Adams Holiday or parade. The reputation of Shep. being racist..when have you ever heard, read in paper, or seen on T.V. that a minority was a crime victim because of race in Bullitt Co? We do have our share of high school drop-outs that ride around in junky Ford pick-ups with their Rebel Flags flying off the backs, but they are not taken seriously by anyone that matters. Racism may exist in small doses here, but where dosen't it? People should really be worried about the Meth/Drug problem we have. EVERY DAMNED time it's a white trash REDNECK arrested, not a minority. Sorry, this is just a fact, not my opinion. Before anybody gets pissed about this responce, look up the facts or talk to ANY county Law Enforcement Officer. A few bigoted uneducated rednecks does not a county make! By the way, I'm white.

You are right, of course. Everyone knew what Sherman Adams did. I grew up with his oldest daughter and spent time at their home occassionally. I loved Maureen(his wife) and Sharon (my friend). Sherman was a jerk and a racist, but his kids couldn't help what he did. And unfortunately his reputation lives on. And I also concur that most of the racist stupidity comes from redkneck kids in rusted out trucks flying their confederate flags out of ignorance. In all reality when I grew up in Bullitt County we were all friends. Color didn't matter.

I too knew one of Sherman's girls. Worked with her for years. I never once heard her mention her father. She was a good person. The sins of the father don't always come home to roost. I bet that most of the teens, and they are but a few, who fly the Rebel Rag, have never even heard of him. No one should really believe that the KKK is a factor in Bullitt anymore. Look what just happened in Brandenburg. They lost in court AGAIN! Must pay big money that they don't have. I've been around here forever, no sign of the hatemongers.

Flying a confederate flag doesn't automatically make you a redneck or racist anymore than wearing a big X on your shirt automatically makes you a black panther.
The Klan also flys the Christain flag, does that make all christains white supremist? You people need to educate yourselves.

It is important to note, however, that the official flag of the Ku Klux Klan, as stated by this organization itself, is the flag of the United States of America, not the CSA battle flag. The Aryan Nation also uses the U.S. flag as well as the Christian flag displayed in Protestant churches.

I have heard that minorities aren't welcome in shepherdsville. Up until a few years ago the military warned (black) soldiers not to go there after dark. Everyone I ask denies knowing what's happened there, but quickly changes the subject. Can anyone tell me what happened? And if it's still as bad there today?
Some background information is:
When Jefferson County desegregated schools in the 60s, many of the white people that had a problem with it (racists) move over the county lines to Bullitt County due to the KKK history in the county and little to no minorities living in Bullitt County. I would like to think it is getting better or has gotten better. I haven't heard of any hate crimes or things like that in Bullitt in the last 10 years. But there is still a far way to go as far as attitudes in the county. Due to the community growing as far as businesses, there has been an increase in minority population but by no means I would call the county diverse. I hope the area continues to progress in eliminating ignorance in the area. It doesn't help attrack new businesses nor is it a good reputation to have as a community.

I moved to Bullitt County 31 years ago. There were many black families who lived in the county at that time, most were in the city limits of Shepherdsville. They were respected and contributing citizens just like the white families who reside here. The clan was more prominent then, but most people didn't pay a lot of attention to that very small minority of racists. Today I know many people in Bullitt County who have minority friendships, including myself, and our friends are always welcome in our homes, our businesses and our communities. Whoever started this post isn't properly informed on the majority of the people who live in our county. Like any other small rural county, there are a few ignorant people who still hang on to the prejudices they were taught growing up, however, the majority of people here are above judging people by the color of their skin.
If you want to get an accurate account of how we in Bullitt treat people, come to one of our sporting events, a town meeting, or some other public gathering where there are people of all races, and see for yourself how we interact with each other. Don't let opinions of others make your decision for you.

Since the miserable Sherman is dead, I didn't name him out of respect for his family. You are right, though, everyone knew him. Be nice.

I say we all go back to the way it was before we started letting the minorities in here!!! If you notice there is 4 times as much crime and drugs in the town since the minorities have started gaining turf control. I can remember a time whe we could all walk the streets and let our children play in the yards but now it has gotten out of hand! None of this bull shit started until we let our guards down and let them infiltrate our land. We all must stand up and take a stand and not be pushed out of our rights and homes for these people. Just take a look around you will plainly see the white skinned folks being pushed out slowly but surely while the non whites still keep getting bigger and bigger!!!

You are goign to find racisim everywhere you go. Whether it is blacks not caring for whites or whites not liking blacks. I have lived in Bullitt County my whole entire life (21 years) and as far back as I can remember there have always been a mixture of blacks and whites. Who cares what color you are? Act like an adult and get over the situation and if you can't get ver it keep your ugly comments to yourself.
